Spiritual Realization and Fire Alarms…

.............. November 8, 2014

“What is spiritual realization? The belief that you are spirit? No, that’s a thought. A little closer to the truth than the thought that believes you are who your birth certificate says you are, but still a thought. Spiritual realization is to see clearly that what I perceive, experience, think, or feel is ultimately not who I am, that I cannot find myself in all those things that continuously pass away. The Buddha was probably the first human being to see this clearly, and so anata (no self) became one of the central points of his teaching. And when Jesus said, “Deny thyself,” what he meant was: Negate (and thus undo) the illusion of self. If the self – ego – were truly who I am, it would be absurd to “deny” it.

What remains is the light of consciousness in which perceptions, experiences, thoughts, and feelings come and go. That is Being, that is the deeper, true I. When I know myself as that, whatever happens in my life is no longer of absolute but only of relative importance. I honor it, but it loses its absolute seriousness, its heaviness. The only thing that ultimately matters is this: Can I sense my essential Beingness, the I Am, in the background of my life at all times: To be more accurate, can I sense my essential identity as consciousness itself? Or am I losing myself in what happens, losing myself in the mind, in the world?”
(from A New Earth, Eckhart Tolle, pp. 78-79.)

These words, from Eckhart Tolle, ring true in my experience and understanding of the deepest aspects of Life.

At times along life’s journey I have enjoyed moments of connection to Life and Life’s Mystery… perhaps it is that rather otherworldly experience of being part of some great oneness… contact with the Source of Life Energy or Spirit coursing through my being… and so immersed in this world in the presence of the present moment…

Sometimes we are forgetful of this connection or lost in the mass consciousness of our surroundings, various roles we play, or just in the maze of the rambling thoughts from yesterday and tomorrow in which our egoic mind so skillfully plays with us… accompanied by fears, regrets, hopes, comparisons… and on and on … Sometimes we need a reminder to look for this essence of identity… and a few practices come to mind to help us do this…

…Then, all of a sudden the fire alarm blasts throughout the building and I spring into action …from considering consciousness and identity… to the role of resident manager… and respond with actions of known protocols and procedures on how to act in in a fire emergency. And of course, I am now writing this 3 hours later… after the commotion and smoke has settled… No fire, just smoke from a resident falling asleep with something cooking and burning on the stove…

There’s nothing like short loud bursts from a fire alarm to bring you right into the moment and away from moments of contemplation… yet there continued a real sense of presence even in the blaring noise… when one is responsible for the safety of others, direct communication is essential… and once the fire responders arrive, they are in charge of the scene… and I move to outside the building to see if anyone has been left behind… We were missing 8 people. Since by this time I knew it was more like a fire drill than a dangerous emergency, I ask permission to re-enter and check on residents that were not outside. Only one person chose to stay inside because they didn’t think it was an actual fire.

So, where there is smoke… there isn’t always fire… but there was definitely hot energy present which could have become a dangerous fire…

…and now we return again to this now…

Our identities and roles in the world are part of the journey and path we take on… although I know I am not really a role… I have roles, but they are not who I am… just like I have a continuously changing internal landscape of bodily functions and feelings and thoughts, and sensations and images and whatever other things come to consciousness…. We may have many important identities… to ourselves and others…. Yet in the middle of it all…in the middle of the blaring world around us… we remain still… in the center of consciousness… one with Life Energy… one with Source Energy… one with that observing consciousness that is at its essence, Being… and from this place we respond… rather than react from unconscious patterns, fears, or other ego-related aspects….

If you’d like to recall, discuss, or explore this aspect of who we really are, feel free to be in touch….

"...who you truly are...

"When you know who you truly are, there is an abiding alive sense of peace. You could call it joy because that's what joy is; vibrantly alive peace. It is the joy of knowing yourself as the very life essence before life takes form. That is the joy of Being - of being who you really are."

Creating Consciousness to Grow in Presence Power

By Eckhart Tolle

"In ordinary unconsciousness, habitual resistance to or denial of what is creates the unease and discontent that most people accept as normal living... When this resistance becomes intensified through some challenge or threat to the ego, it brings up intense negativity such as anger, acute fear, aggression, depression, and so on. Deep unconsciousness often means that the pain-body has been triggered and that you have become identified with it. Physical violence would be impossible without deep unconsciousness. It can also occur easily whenever and wherever a crowd of people or even an entire nation generates a negative collective energy field.

The best indicator of your level of consciousness is how you deal with life’s challenges when they come. Through those challenges, an already unconscious person tends to become more deeply unconscious, and a conscious person more intensely conscious. You can use a challenge to awaken you, or you can allow it to pull you into even deeper sleep. The dream of ordinary unconsciousness then turns into a nightmare.

If you cannot be present even in normal circumstances, such as when you are sitting alone in a room, walking in the woods, or listening to someone, then you certainly won’t be able to stay conscious when something “goes wrong” or you are faced with difficult people or situations, with loss or the threat of loss. You will be taken over by a reaction, which ultimately is always some form of fear, and pulled into deep unconsciousness. Those challenges are your tests. Only the way in which you deal with them will show you and others where you are at as far as your state of consciousness is concerned, not how long you can sit with your eyes closed or what visions you see.

So it is essential to bring more consciousness into your life in ordinary situations when everything is going relatively smoothly. In this way, you grow in presence power. It generates an energy field in you and around you of a high vibrational frequency. No unconsciousness, no negativity, no discord or violence can enter that field and survive, just as darkness cannot survive in the presence of light.

When you learn to be the witness of your thoughts and emotions, which is an essential part of being present, you may be surprised when you first become aware of the background “static” of ordinary unconsciousness and realize how rarely, if ever, you are truly at ease within yourself. On the level of your thinking, you will find a great deal of resistance in the form of judgment, discontent, and mental projection away from the Now. On the emotional level, there will be an undercurrent of unease, tension, boredom, or nervousness. Both are aspects of the mind in its habitual resistance mode.

So how can we be free of this affliction?

Make it conscious. Observe the many ways in which unease, discontent, and tension arise within you through unnecessary judgment, resistance to what is, and denial of the Now. Anything unconscious dissolves when you shine the light of consciousness on it. Once you know how to dissolve ordinary unconsciousness, the light of your presence will shine brightly, and it will be much easier to deal with deep unconsciousness whenever you feel its gravitational pull.

However, ordinary unconsciousness may not be easy to detect initially because it is so normal.
Make it a habit to monitor your mental-emotional state through self-observation. “Am I at ease at this moment?” is a good question to ask yourself frequently. Or you can ask: “What’s going on inside me at this moment?” Be at least as interested in what goes on inside you as what happens outside. If you get the inside right, the outside will fall into place. Primary reality is within, secondary reality without.

But don’t answer these questions immediately. Direct your attention inward. Have a look inside yourself. What kind of thoughts is your mind producing? What do you feel? Direct your attention into the body. Is there any tension? Once you detect that there is a low level of unease, the background static, see in what way you are avoiding, resisting, or denying life — by denying the Now. With practice, your power of self-observation, of monitoring your inner state, will become sharpened. Excerpted from Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now, pages 72-93. ..."

THE PRECIOUSNESS OF BEING

THE PRECIOUSNESS OF BEING

by Eckhart Tolle ...Reprinted from Eckhart Tolle's Findhorn Retreat: Stillness Amidst the World, © 2006 by Eckhart Tolle, Eckhart Teachings Inc.

We're here to find that dimension within ourselves that is deeper than thought.

This teaching isn't based on knowledge, on new interesting facts, new information. The world is full of that already. You can push any button on the many devices you have and get information. You're drowning in information.

And ultimately, what is the point of it all? More information, more things, more of this, more of that. Are we going to find the fullness of life through more things and greater and bigger shopping malls?

Are we going to find ourselves through improving our ability to think and analyze, and accumulate more information, more stuff? Is "more" going to save the world? It's all form.

You can never make it on the level of form. You can never quite arrange and accumulate all the forms that you think you need so that you can be yourself fully. Sometimes you can do it for a brief time span. You can suddenly find everything working in your life: your health is good; your relationship is great; you have money, possessions, love, and respect from other people.
But before long, something starts to crumble here or there, either the finances or the relationship, your health or your work or living situation. It is the nature of the world of form that nothing stays fixed for very long - and so it starts to fall apart again.
The voice in the head that never stops speaking becomes a civilization that is obsessed with form, and therefore knows nothing of the most important dimension of human existence: the sacred, the stillness, the formless, the divine. "What does it profit you if you gain the whole world and lose yourself?"
It has been said that there are two ways of being unhappy: not getting what you want, and getting what you want. When people attain what the world tells us is desirable - wealth, recognition, property, achievement - they're still not happy, at least not for long. They're not at peace with themselves. They don't have a true sense of security, a sense of finally having arrived.
Their achievements have not provided them with what they were really looking for - themselves. They have not given them the sense of being rooted in life, or as Jesus calls it, the fullness of life. The form of this moment is the portal into the formless dimension. It is the narrow gate that Jesus talks about that leads to life. Yes, it's very narrow: it's only this moment.
To find it, you need to roll up the scroll of your life on which your story is written, past and future. Before there were books, there were scrolls, and you rolled them up when you were done with them.
So put your story away. It is not who you are. People usually live carrying a burden of past and future, a burden of their personal history, which they hope will fulfill itself in the future. It won't, so roll up that old scroll. Be done with it.
You don't solve problems by thinking; you create problems by thinking. The solution always appearswhen you step out of thinking and become still and absolutely present, even if only for a moment. Then, a little later when thought comes back, you suddenly have a creative insight that wasn't there before.
Let go of excessive thinking and see how everything changes. Your relationships change because you don't demand that the other person should do something for you to enhance your sense of self. You don't compare yourself to others or try to be more than someone else to strengthen your sense of identity.
You allow everyone to be as they are. You don't need to change them; you don't need them to behave differently so that you can be happy.
There's nothing wrong with doing new things, pursuing activities, exploring new countries, meeting new people, acquiring knowledge and expertise, developing your physical or mental abilities, and creating whatever you're called upon to create in this world. It is beautiful to create in this world, and there is always more that you can do.
Now the question is, Are you looking for yourself in what you do? Are you attempting to add more to who you think you are? Are you compulsively striving toward the next moment and the next and the next, hoping to find some sense of completion and fulfillment?
The preciousness of Being is your true specialness. What the egoic self had been looking for on the level of the story - I want to be special - obscured the fact that you could not be more special than you already are now. Not special because you are better or more wretched than someone else, but because you can sense a beauty, a preciousness, an aliveness deep within.
When you are present in this moment, you break the continuity of your story, of past and future. Then true intelligence arises, and also love. The only way love can come into your life is not through form, but through that inner spaciousness that is Presence. Love has no form.

Truth... Examining "what is"...

Truth…

“The unexamined life is not worth living.”
―
Socrates
“The past has no power over the present moment.”
―
Eckhart Tolle

And, of course the paraphrase of the old adage; “The truth will set you free.” …
“If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.”
―
Mark Twain
This morning I took a few moments to examine “what is”… right now.

This can a powerful and enlightening exercise and I recommend you give it a try…

·         Set a timer for 5 minutes.

·         Take a paper and something to write with… or in these days, you may want to use your computer.

·         Start the timer and, as quickly as possible, write down thoughts or words that enter your mind… without any censoring…

·         Stop when the timer goes off…

·         Examine the words, thoughts, and feelings you wrote about in the preceding 5 minutes… you may be surprised as to where the mind goes when left to romp in the wild!

·         This gives us a picture of “what is” at this time and what may be “on our mind” or what may emerge from our unconscious when we just let our mind play out its tapes.

·         How much is based on the past?

·         How much is concern or hoes about something future?

·         What is actually true?

·         How much of it can be considered “negative self talk?”

·         How much is comparing to others?

Take as much time as you wish to consider the “mind ramble” you just experienced.

This is simply designed to show us what our mind does when left to wander and also to bring a bit of clarity perhaps to our present “state on mind.”

Our mental abilities are a valuable tool of survival and also of creativity. And the mind can also be guided and controlled by unconscious or somewhat unconscious fears and dynamics.  Examining the wanderings of the egoic mind may help us to dis-identify and become free of less than satisfying patterns, thoughts, and dynamics.

In some of the suggestions for meditation we are guided to still the mind. If you find this hard to impossible as I sometimes do, might I suggest that you focus the mind on something positive for 5-10 minutes. We can call this creative processing or contemplation. For instance, pick a positive characteristic, quality, or feeling that you would like to strengthen or develop in your life. Spend your time “thinking” about this quality and write down what comes your way.  You may use whatever words you wish. A few suggestions are: Love, Truth, Beauty, Peace, Serenity, Compassion, Oneness, Presence, etc…

Enjoy the present moment…

Relationships in 2012 & Beyond

"Love is a state of being.
Your love is not outside your body;
it is deep within you.
You can never lose it,
and it cannot leave you.
It is not dependent on some other body,
some external form."

~ Eckhart Tolle, in Practicing the Power of Now, p.72

Many people are in a relationship with a partner. Others are open to a new relationship. We are all in relationships of one form or another with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc.

The words of Eckhart Tolle ring true and we must tap into the inner Source and resource of Love if we are to have a sense of inner peace and acceptance. Whatever you may call this inner Source of Loving Life Energy, it seems to be the key to what is labeled "self-esteem"..."self-worth"... "self-love"... which in my opinion is really an acceptance of the Love of "God"..."Goddess"... "Source" to ourselves. It involves coming to a realization that Life is One and we are all much more than individuals; we are a part of the unity of all that is.

The core of Love at the innermost part of our being is Being itself. It is from this centered space that we can be most in relationship without the neediness or codependency that can take us into the land of the lost... or at least feeling lost.

Centered in the love within our soul can be compared with coming home to a true sense of integrity within which provides a foundation or reference to respond with loving kindness, rather than reacting from some egoic concept, expectation, want, or other form of attachment.

Of course, we are all human 'beings' and are in a universal learning laboratory of sorts. Therefore many interactions within relating with others will provide lessons. It seems to work out best when all the people involved are at least open to learning and growing; an openness to possibilities.

When we look outside ourselves for something to fill a void within our soul, we will most likely find disappointment around one of the corners. Now it is true that there are experiences that can only result in satisfaction as we are in relationship with others. The natural human needs for social contact, as well as sensual, sexual, touchy-feelly contact... the touch or hug as well as the companionship and sharing of life experiences... they are all the wonderful interactions we share with others. We also partner for other purposes of specific cooperative missions, raising a family, business opportunities, just plan fun, and many more.

LOVE is an inside-out job! Love is something we can feel within and share. When I truly am in touch with that energy of Source love, then there is a sense of respect for all of Life; and a love for all that comes into my sphere of consciousness. Others who may not be in touch with that "Source-Love" in the moment may have wants and expectations and desires that may be different than my own sense of direction, wants, and needs. It is here that something happens that we often label as "conflict." And it is in this moment of difference that the learning moment arises. Unless we choose to avoid  it...deny it... withdraw to some other place or activity... blame the other so we can maintain our own 'pure sense of being right'... all forms of avoidance.

There is much that can be learned in the whole area of "conflict resolution." Because I needed to learn how to deal with conflict and differences, I studied it, practiced it, and became a teacher for peer mediation as well as doing mediations in various settings. Without going into it in depth, there is a necessary shift that needs to occur to find out what we have in common, beyond the differences. And also an acceptance that differences are not wrong, they are just differences. There are ways to communicate with love that are not just venting, blaming, attacking, or controlling through the silent treatment...

We all have our concepts and world views and various ideas about this, that, and everything else. And beyond and beneath all the mental chatter with which we become so easily identified, there is the stillness and the center of Being...of Life... of Love...

If we could only do one thing each day, it seems vital that we visit our "Home" within... visit the Source and Energy of Life... which to me, is the 'Sacred Spirit' and Breath of Life within All that is....

The quickest way for me is simply to be present now... with my breath, the sensations within, the Life Energy streaming through the body at all times.... and as we turn our attention to these other areas the streaming of thoughts may subside to a level that we can be with what is... If other things, like feelings or body tensions, come to the fore, we can notice them and breath into them...accepting all that arises gently letting them come and letting them go... just as our breathing is a sort of death and rebirth with every cycle.... so to is Life... ever new and renewed in this Present Moment...

Much Love,

John

What Limits the Flow of Love?

What limits the flow of Love?

The short answer in my opinion and experience is that the only thing that inhibits, slows, limits, or diminishes the flow of love is 'fear.'

This morning, as I sat in my favorite Denver breakfast restaurant, I was contemplating this question. What is your immediate response? I asked Cassandra, the woman waitress, and her immediate response without hesitation was, "self."

And it seems it is true...we are the only ones who can limit Life's Loving flow through our being... both to ourselves, out to others, and to the world... all part of the Life Energy organic package from Source.

And why do we limit Love's flow?

Again I would come back to some form of 'fear' factor.
  • fear of rejection
  • fear of disappointment
  • fear of being hurt in some way
  • fear of something good happening
  • fear of responsibility
  • fear of commitment
  • fear of abandonment
  • fear of 'death'
  • fear of the past repeating itself
  • fear of loss
  • and the list goes on...
I'm sure you have your own 'main' fear that pops up as you are reading these words...

It's good to look at fears for a time so we can decide whether we wish to be controlled by 'fear' and negativity... or whether we are choosing to live life with loving and positive energy flowing through our being... Remember, that it is good to look at the fears long enough to make a decision about what to do... and not continually focus on our fears. We know that what we focus upon tends to grow and I'm sure we all know someone that seems trapped in a 'fear' state of mind... It's probably a good time to move from that 'state.'

We begin this journey on planet earth in our physical body with some care-givers that we call parents or they may be surrogate parents of some type. We begin by being dependent on others and it seems reasonable that our energy bodies pick up all the energies in our care-giving environment, whether they are love-based or fear-based... and usually are a mixture of the two...

When abusive and traumatic things happen in our early days... or for that matter, it can be at any time... there can be a negative memory created and some fear instilled almost like a dark hole in the psyche or soul. Various healing and energy techniques and soul retrieval inward journeys ...sometimes referred to as shamanic journeys... can certainly help to restore the soul's energy and wholeness. It can be seen as recalling the 'missing piece.' Many of us have been fortunate enough to experience this healing process.

Yes, the "self" has some control over the flow of love to us and through us. Often, after a painful disappointment or trauma, a part of us seems to shut down. When we use our 'Will' to actually plug the channel for life energy or 'spirit' to flow through our body in an act of defiance or refusal to live in some way, we can end up in a rather dark night which can be called different things. the most popular one may be "depression." This provides a retreat of sorts and may give us a time to heal and get to point of trying again. For some, they seem to get stuck in the hole and appear to dig themselves deeper into the night.

Fear can be based upon real life situations that occurred sometime in the past. Fear can also be based on imagined threats or anxieties if we focus on all the negative things that might happen in the future.
I'd like to suggest that one of our bodies main fears or anxieties has to do with the reality that our physical form will end... which is called "death" by most cultures. It is important that we come to terms in our own way with this FACT. Of course, even those of us who have experienced some form of spiritual awakening may agree with Woody Allen when he said, "I'm not afraid of dying; I just don't want to be there when it happens."  And often the fear and anxiety has more to do with fantasies about the circumstances in which our body's 'END' may occur.

Whatever our beliefs and fantasies are about the future, they are just that, imaginary movies based upon our creative mind. The future may exist in some timeless NOW. But our imagination can do us more harm than good. We all 'remember,' in some form, our experiences from the past.... and we also project into the unknown from time to time. Eckhart Tolle is one modern teacher who reminds us that the "Present Moment" is really the only 'time' there is... The past is not present except to the extent we recreate in our creative mind. The same holds true for any future events.

So there is fear that arises from experience and from imagination. The presence of the "NOW" brings us into this space and timelessness... and it is here now that we may allow the abundance of Loving Life Energy or Spirit to flow through our 3D energetic and physical forms.

The nice thing about being more interdependent and 'adult-like' is that we can exercise our freedom to choose more directly. Today ... this moment... may be a good time to renew or call back your Loving Spirit and the Source of Life Energy ...to be born or reborn into this moment... letting go of yesterday and tomorrow...

Much Love,
John

"The Past Cannot Survive..."

"The past cannot survive in your presence... Whatever you need to know about the unconscious past in you, the challenges of the present will bring it out. If you delve into the past, it will become a bottomless pit... there is always more...

Access the power of Now. That is the key. The power of Now in none other than the power of your presence, your consciousness liberated from thought forms...

Give attention to the present; give attention to your behavior, to your reactions, mughts, emotions, fears, and desires as they occur in the present. There's the past in you. If you can be present enough to watch all those things, not critically or analytically but nonjudgmentally, then you are dealing with the past and dissolving it through the power of your presence.

You cannot find youself by going into the past. You find yourself bu coming into the present."

"...there's no there there...."

"Somebody, I don't recall who, once said: "When you get there, there's no there there". This applies not only to location in space, but also to time: when you get to the future, you find yourself in the present moment. So the future never comes. Don't let the thought of future (or past) obscure the preciousness of the present moment."

Miracles of Participation... a reminder...

Greetings...

One evening while talking with a friend about Life and our spiritual journey, I heard the words come out of my mouth> "we are miracles of participation..." that indeed Life itself is a miracle  and we are privileged to be a part of all  that is... indeed it is not individuals breathing the air of life... it is the Universe breathing all... I was reminded of this when I read the following quote by Eckhart Tolle:

"You are not IN the universe, you ARE the universe, an intrinsic part of it. Ultimately you are not a person, but a focal point where the universe is becoming conscious of itself. What an amazing miracle."

Love and Blessings to you....John
