Psychosynthesis

Psychosynthesis

The theory and practice of what has been labeled Psychosynthesis (PS) is a complete approach to coaching, guiding, and growth for both personal and professional applications. There are several reasons for this:

  • The theory and practice of  PS is open-ended which makes it quite inclusive on the one hand and, on the other hand, hard to define in simple terms;
  • PS addresses the dimension of personality development, harmonization of various aspects, ‘intra’ and ‘inter’ conflict resolution and coordination, integration, and synthesis;
  • PS addresses the dimension of spiritual development, integration and synthesis; the affirmation of Meaningful Life Energy… Higher Self Realization… conscious connection with Source;
  • PS provides guidance in letting go and dis-identifying from various aspects of personal attachments;
  • PS utilizes any and all spiritual teachings that help access superconscious dimensions and the highest and deepest reality of our collective being;
  • PS provides a dynamic map of consciousness as a tool for guiding, education, discussion and understanding;
  • PS focuses both on increasing awareness and developing choice based on more inclusive arenas of consciousness;
  • PS provides theory and practice for discovering identity, dis-identification from false identities, and reconnecting with the Authentic or Highest Reality of Being within us and Life;
  • PS provides modalities for the coordination and harmonization of creativity and compassion in Self Expression;
  • PS focuses on authentic growth and discovery aimed at Service in the world.

History and Background

Psychosynthesis offers an approach to human development that is both profound and hopeful. While it acknowledges and works with the pain and suffering inherent in the human condition, it also suggests a path for empowering our human ability to create harmony, synthesis, and full expression of the spiritual. The principles of Psychosynthesis can be applied to many areas of human endeavor including psychotherapy, education, consulting, business, and the creative arts.

The founder of psychosynthesis, Roberto Assagioli, was an Italian psychiatrist and a contemporary of Freud and Jung. He, along with Carl Jung, recognized that psychoanalytic theory contained a brilliant explanation of the workings of the human psyche, but he also saw that this theory lacked an understanding of how the creative and healing aspects of the psyche operated.

Starting in 1910, Assagioli began the work of building a model that would explain the development of those aspects. He focused on how human beings move toward increasing wholeness, integrating or synthesizing all the parts of the personality to work harmoniously together, so each person can respond creatively, even joyfully, to the psychological and spiritual demands of life. He incorporated principles and practices from Buddhism, Yoga, and other Eastern philosophies, as well as from Christianity and other Western philosophies and psychologies. After his death in 1974, Assagioli's many students all over the world continued the work of developing this theory.

The Psychosynthesis Approach

Psychosynthesis is oriented toward wellness and potential rather than pathology. This approach points to the nature of the personal self (or “I”), the will, the multi-dimensional unconscious, the personality structure, and our spiritual Source (or “Self”). Psychosynthesis principles and practices emphasize the relationship of the various personality functions to one another and to “I”, and the relationship of “I” to “Self”… of individual to Universal.

Assagioli conceived of “I” or personal self as awareness and intentionality, or will. “I” makes the choices that determine life direction, style, and form. He saw “I” to be without qualities—pure awareness and will—and the manifestation of a Transpersonal Self, an energetic transcendent-immanent Source of all life. “Self-realization” refers to the expression of Self through the personality (with “I” acting as administrative agent).

Much of the time we are caught up in a survival trance, identified with our passing emotions, our beliefs and assumptions, our concepts and ideas about the way things are, and our bodily sensations and appearance. When we identify with one or another part of the personality, we cannot be clearly aware of the rest of our reality, nor of the guidance of Self. Psychosynthesis guiding seeks to help us disidentify from limited patterns of feeling, thought, and behavior so we can move our awareness freely among them, and act from conscious choice, in alignment with Self.

Self is always present, whether or not we are feeling particularly “centered” or “whole,” even when we are caught up with a passing feeling or belief. We often associate the feeling of “being centered” with Self, but sometimes we awaken to Self in the midst of despair and disintegration. It is an important focus within psychosynthesis that the “source energy” is not above or separate from any aspect of our everyday life. The “Self” in this respect is both immanent (within) and transcendent (beyond). One way to say this is that “we are always more than we think or feel we are.” Spiritual psychosynthesis is the process of awakening to the presence and movement of Self in the whole of our lives, so that we live and act in greater harmony, bringing our deepest gifts into action in the world.

Flipping the switch... Illumination!

When we enter our home at night, illumination comes as we flip a switch... and the lights come on!

So, the question is: "Can we find illumination just as quickly when we face a decision or issue that calls for a response?"

Each day brings with it the sunrise. The mystery flaming torch that lights our days and is absence to us at night. There is a rhythm to this magical globe of illumination that comes and goes in cycles. We take it for granted since that is our experience and has always been our experience.

This is the nature of our world in which the sun with its light and energy illuminates our environment and produces growth and change. Without the sun and earth in the proximity that exists, life, as we know it would not exist.

The illumination that comes into our consciousness is also like a light of knowing, bringing clarity to us to some extent... even though the mystery always exists.

Answers and messages come in the light of day and also in the light of night through dreams in which our highest Self, that aspect of our being is tranmitting symbols and messages from other less conscious aspects of who we are.

The dream scene may be trying to convey some reality and energetic dynamic that our egoic mind may not be aware of and in fact may actually be guarding against its entrance to our consciousness. Now the egoic mind is not 'bad' or 'negative.' It is the result of learning survival in our earth world and as it has built a strong fortress, it also has developed a might defense against change to varying degrees depending on each person.

In fact, a night 'terror' or 'nightmare' may actually be some bit of illumination trying to get past the defensive walls of the ego. We experience this as fear in the night and in our body and when it actually may be the ego using fear to inhibit change and expansion of awareness.

Dreams are one avenue for illumination.

Another path of illumination is our intuition and active imagination. In intuition we tune into our body and sensations and answers coming into our consciousness beyond the reasoning mind. This may be the experience in relaxation and meditation in which we still the mind chatter and let go of trying to "figure it all out."

In active imagination, we may do a day-dream type journey to the top of a mountain where we meet up with a wise person with whom to talk. Another method is to visualize looking at clouds or entering the clouds and asking our guides , God, or Higher Self a questions and allow an answer to emerge from the unseen... answers from the unconscious. Answers may come in the form of symbols, words, images, or simply a knowing in our body. The trick is often to trust what we receive before the egoic mind starts to analyze and bring in doubt and confusion.

Another more 'acceptable' form in our societies is to do the research, think it through, do the mental work of understanding and learning as much as we can about the focus of our inquiry. Then in the periods of incubation and silence, there sometimes pops an answer, a solution, an option we had not considered. This may be seen as building a point of mental tension in which the creative spark and impulse may leap across the mysterious chasm of the unknown into our consciousness. Many inventors find their genius-ness in this very way...

Illumination is that which brings clarity in the confusion and light into the darkness. It brings 'out of the box' answers and a new and fresh beginning of sorts.

Where does clarity come from? From the mystery it seems... from the mind that is One mind... from the unified field that transcends egoic defenses and breaks into our consciousness from time to time... In essence, we may say that all is energy and all is mind and all is connected...so, clarity and illumination bridges the spiritual and material and shows us the oneness beyond duality.

Each of us can flip the switch and have the lights come on... trust the larger mind to which we all have access... of which we all are included in the One Life Energy...

Much Love,

Life’s Basic Dynamics…

A few thoughts about Life’s basic dynamics…
Through the stained glass filter of John Hutchinson

Life Energy

We are alive and conscious…now…We are aware that we are aware… Life is One Sacred Interwoven Spirit…

Awareness

Beyond all the roles and various identities we may entertain, we are pure awareness… One with Being… We are always more than we think we are….

Attention

What we focus upon tends to grow and expand… when we do not consciously choose our focus, we are controlled by unconscious dynamics from past and collective sources, along with the requirements of survival…

Will

We are humans, Being and Doing… We act, respond, and react… We are “deciders” and the lead ‘acter’ on our journey… co-creators on the path…When we do not consciously choose our response, we react and are controlled by unconscious dynamics from past and collective sources… sometimes referred to as shadow or dark energies…

Intention

Conscious intention motivated from Love and Awareness provides guidance and energy to move and act in accordance with that chosen direction… Intention from the depth of our heart provides a passionate and enthusiastic drive, energy, and ambition in a determined direction…

Love

Consciousness in the present moment provides the opportunity to respond with loving kindness that respects the Oneness of Life everywhere, in all ways and all times… Doing good while harming no one or nothing…

Yes

Energy that provides affirmation and growth… the answer to most questions and decisions can be sensed intuitively as a ‘yes’ if it is aligned with our deepest and highest purpose, values, and intention…

No

Energy that can limit and move us in a different direction than the one we are considering or asked to follow… the answer to most questions and decisions can be sensed intuitively as a ‘no’ if it does not align with our deepest and highest purpose, values, and intention…

Physical Body

Our body, including senses and sensations are provided for survival and continuation of the physical form on Spaceship Earth…with all its pleasures and pains… We have a physical body and we are more than our body…

Emotions

We have emotions and we are more than our emotions… emotions serve as a useful tool which are often a reflection of how our own worldview, beliefs, wishes, and expectations interact with what is happening around us… focus on ‘what is’ with  awareness and acceptance provides opportunity to make wise choices…

Thinking

We have mental abilities and we are more than our egoic mental activity… The mind is a useful tool of survival and functioning every day… When controlled by unconscious patterns and dynamics, the mind can justify any action… Consciously focusing our mind can provide expanding creativity and growth…

Intuition

We have access to information that is outside of the physical senses which can be experienced as hunches, pops, psychic knowing, premonition, ESP…it may be through the psychic cords of connections to close family members and can also be connection to other more global unseen sources… It is often referred to as the realm of spirit… We all have intuition capabilities and we are more than our intuition…

Unconscious

The unconscious refers to all information, energy dynamics, and patterns of which we are not aware… they may be from previous experience in our individualized or personal experience… they may be from the past and ongoing collective unconscious… and they be from what we might call the “superconscious” or higher more “spiritual” energies that may be outside of our awareness…

Superconscious

We are and have access to an expanded realm with higher and more inclusive energies which may include, Primary Life Energy, Spiritual Source Love, Wisdom, Joy, Peace, Stillness, Beauty, and more… The expansion into the superconscious may be accessed at times through sudden trauma, dreams, imagery, intuition, visions, and also more naturally through practicing contemplation, meditation, and other methods to still the egoic or person mental activity.

Higher Self

There is an aspect to our psyche that seems, for the most part, to be just a bit above our normal personal consciousness…. It can be thought of as our higher personal and spiritual guide… It is our internal source of love and wisdom and is our synthesizing center… when we pray or attempt to receive answers, we can visualize our energy center as the sun above our body… At times I assume this Higher Self aspect of our psyche or soul is a personal liaison with the Life Source… it is like a transformer and transducer that steps up and down the communication of energy to and from Source… and translates that energy into meaningful symbols in the form of images sounds, words, and sensations…

Unseen Guides

We can also call these entities/energies, “guardian angels,” or even “ETs,” or whatever name you have learned… There is an assumed always-present aspect of the unseen world that often only makes itself present to our awareness when it is truly needed… For those of us who have experienced this ‘realty’ there is no question that we can assume this with a solid amount of certainty…

Source

There are many names and labels provided for that ‘Mystery’ of Life which I will  describe as The Oneness of Life Energy, Great Spirit, Father/Mother God, ALL that IS, Being, The Nothingness that is Everything, Great Mystery, The Manufacturer and Distributor of the Cosmic Glue called Love, One… and, of course, all the names the various world religions have provided through the specific societal and cultural milieu within the ‘nows’ of their times…

Time and Space

When we experience premonitions and receive intuitive pops about others located in a different place, we experience the expansion of consciousness beyond time and space… We understand that ‘Time and Space’ are useful in the functioning of our daily lives and that they are also and fundamentally illusory creations for life in the 3rd dimensional world…

The Present Moment (Now)

We remember other nows and we project with imagination into future nows… Yet the only real ‘time’ in this present moment… we spend so much energy either reliving the past or project our fears and hopes into the future, that we lose consciousness in this present moment… It seems one of our main purposes is to become fully here in the ‘NOW’ …in our body on this planet, until we are not… I might add, bringing through our form the essence of Love in this present moment…

What other Life basics would you like to add?
