Spiritual Realization and Fire Alarms…

.............. November 8, 2014

“What is spiritual realization? The belief that you are spirit? No, that’s a thought. A little closer to the truth than the thought that believes you are who your birth certificate says you are, but still a thought. Spiritual realization is to see clearly that what I perceive, experience, think, or feel is ultimately not who I am, that I cannot find myself in all those things that continuously pass away. The Buddha was probably the first human being to see this clearly, and so anata (no self) became one of the central points of his teaching. And when Jesus said, “Deny thyself,” what he meant was: Negate (and thus undo) the illusion of self. If the self – ego – were truly who I am, it would be absurd to “deny” it.

What remains is the light of consciousness in which perceptions, experiences, thoughts, and feelings come and go. That is Being, that is the deeper, true I. When I know myself as that, whatever happens in my life is no longer of absolute but only of relative importance. I honor it, but it loses its absolute seriousness, its heaviness. The only thing that ultimately matters is this: Can I sense my essential Beingness, the I Am, in the background of my life at all times: To be more accurate, can I sense my essential identity as consciousness itself? Or am I losing myself in what happens, losing myself in the mind, in the world?”
(from A New Earth, Eckhart Tolle, pp. 78-79.)

These words, from Eckhart Tolle, ring true in my experience and understanding of the deepest aspects of Life.

At times along life’s journey I have enjoyed moments of connection to Life and Life’s Mystery… perhaps it is that rather otherworldly experience of being part of some great oneness… contact with the Source of Life Energy or Spirit coursing through my being… and so immersed in this world in the presence of the present moment…

Sometimes we are forgetful of this connection or lost in the mass consciousness of our surroundings, various roles we play, or just in the maze of the rambling thoughts from yesterday and tomorrow in which our egoic mind so skillfully plays with us… accompanied by fears, regrets, hopes, comparisons… and on and on … Sometimes we need a reminder to look for this essence of identity… and a few practices come to mind to help us do this…

…Then, all of a sudden the fire alarm blasts throughout the building and I spring into action …from considering consciousness and identity… to the role of resident manager… and respond with actions of known protocols and procedures on how to act in in a fire emergency. And of course, I am now writing this 3 hours later… after the commotion and smoke has settled… No fire, just smoke from a resident falling asleep with something cooking and burning on the stove…

There’s nothing like short loud bursts from a fire alarm to bring you right into the moment and away from moments of contemplation… yet there continued a real sense of presence even in the blaring noise… when one is responsible for the safety of others, direct communication is essential… and once the fire responders arrive, they are in charge of the scene… and I move to outside the building to see if anyone has been left behind… We were missing 8 people. Since by this time I knew it was more like a fire drill than a dangerous emergency, I ask permission to re-enter and check on residents that were not outside. Only one person chose to stay inside because they didn’t think it was an actual fire.

So, where there is smoke… there isn’t always fire… but there was definitely hot energy present which could have become a dangerous fire…

…and now we return again to this now…

Our identities and roles in the world are part of the journey and path we take on… although I know I am not really a role… I have roles, but they are not who I am… just like I have a continuously changing internal landscape of bodily functions and feelings and thoughts, and sensations and images and whatever other things come to consciousness…. We may have many important identities… to ourselves and others…. Yet in the middle of it all…in the middle of the blaring world around us… we remain still… in the center of consciousness… one with Life Energy… one with Source Energy… one with that observing consciousness that is at its essence, Being… and from this place we respond… rather than react from unconscious patterns, fears, or other ego-related aspects….

If you’d like to recall, discuss, or explore this aspect of who we really are, feel free to be in touch….

The Pulse of Spirit - "Knowing Through the Heart"

I recently was working on an article about values in politics. At one point I mention how important I feel it is for there to be a balance between head and heart in political discourse and policy making. David Karchere makes the point quite clearly during this message delivered in May, 2014. - jh

THE PULSE OF SPIRIT

Knowing Through the Heart
May 12, 2014

From a transcription of David Karchere’s words on an international video conference on May 4, 2014
Greetings, everyone. David Karchere here, from North Reddish, England. Here at St. Agnes Church we’ve had a wonderful day with Clive Larsen and friends. And I can tell you, if you haven’t been hugged by the good people of St. Agnes Church, you haven’t been hugged. There’s such a spirit of love in this community! And I’ve been away from home, traveling, long enough that I miss my home. I miss Sunrise Ranch and my family and friends. And at the same time, as I walked into the church this morning, I felt I was coming home.
It’s said that home is where the heart is. Home is where the spirit of love lives. And wherever there are people who embody the spirit of universal love and let it flow freely, there is a true home. So I’m so grateful for what is here and what’s among people, wherever they are, all over the world, where the true home is present and known. And from that true home there is altitude and there is a transmission. There is a tower of faith, a tower of reality, and therefore a transmission from that tower.
For that transmission to come from us, it takes courage. It takes something deliberate. And we might take the attitude about people in our life, “Well, they know I love them.” Do they? It’s so obvious that love is something that is of the heart. It is something that’s transmitted through the heart. And while there’s a vital part that our conscious mind has to play in our spirituality, ultimately, without a heart that’s open and is transmitting the frequency of love, how do we truly connect? How do we connect upward to the larger reality of Being that we are a part of? And how do we connect to other people and to the world?
I’ve been thinking about the role that our human mind plays in our life. And there’s a reason to have a human intellect. It’s vital in all kinds of ways, including the practicality of living life on Planet Earth and in the world in which we live. So the human intellect is vital, but it is no substitute for an open heart. The human intellect can be all about the questions of “what” and “how”: What should happen here? What do I want to happen? What’s going on? And how? How do I make happen what I want to happen? How do I make things work out? What’s the technology, what’s the method? The human mind is good for those kinds of questions.
But the human mind alone is very bad for an even more essential question. And until that more essential question is answered, all the discussion and all the thought about how we do things only lead down a path of destruction. It leads to things like atom bombs and global warming, and wars in Iraq and many other places around the globe. It leads to man’s inhumanity to man. It leads to the rape and destruction of the planet, because only when a person has not answered the “who” of life could they be so seemingly wise as to invent all this technology that we have in our world but at the same time so incredibly ignorant that they don’t know what technology is for. They don’t know the basics for creating a true technology, a technology that would truly serve humanity, that would truly serve this planet and not destroy it.
That most essential question is a question of “who.” The human intellect looks at the question of who: “Who am I?” and in a very intellectual way reflects on the human experience, a human life. Philosophers reflect on human life and ask, “Who am I? Who are we?” and pose that as the great existential question.
There’s a story familiar to many of us. It’s a Bible story. In this story there’s a depiction of the human intellect, the human mind in all its glory, keeping humanity enslaved. And then there’s also a picture of the knowing of Being, the knowing of the reality of God, the knowing of who one is. That story is the story of Pharaoh and Moses, and Moses setting the people free. When faced with Moses’ demand to let his people go, Pharaoh’s answer is: “I know not your God, and I will not let your people go.” The human intellect all by itself, with all its vaunted wisdom, doesn’t know and will never know of itself the answer to the most important question in life—“Who is present?” The answer to this question brings all wisdom and all truth available to the human experience.
The answer to the question can only be known through the heart. It astounds and stupefies the human mind that it can’t know who it is, and it can’t know God. It can’t experience oneness with other people and connect with other people. And the human intellect can’t really connect with this planet, because that knowing and that connection happens only through the open heart. The connection to one another is through the heart, and therefore the knowing of one another is through the heart. The connection with this planet and with all of nature, and therefore the knowing of this planet and the understanding of this planet, is through the heart. And yes, there are things to understand intellectually, but true understanding of the mind only comes when there is connection through the heart.
People make all kinds of attempts to connect with God. Intellectually, we may think that if we meditated long enough, if we prayed long enough, maybe if we practiced yoga long enough, we would connect. Maybe if we confessed enough, said enough repentance, maybe if we studied long enough, maybe if we read long enough, maybe if we went to enough workshops, we would know God. I say no, not ever that way. Not ever.
Through our recent tour in Europe, we have talked about various kinds of courage. There is the courage of performing brave acts, which is the courage of action. That is what we usually think of when we think of courage, and truly that can be courage. And then there is the courage to truly think for yourself, and that is a rare kind of courage. The courage I am addressing now is the courage to open your heart and connect and allow what would come to you in that connection to come to you, to be known by you—to allow what’s available to you from the universe, from other people, from the planet and from God, to come. In that connection we find there is not only something coming to us but there is also something coming from us. There is a knowing and a being known.
So here we are, separated by oceans and miles. You might say we’re always separated by some kind of space; it just depends on how much—seemingly separated by space and many other things, by culture, by personality, by race and gender. I’m asking in this moment whether all of us, connected seemingly by telephone, by Internet and streaming video, can make a different kind of connection right now and perceive through the instrument of the heart the presence of Being, the presence of Being in all people and therefore in each other; the presence of Being in all things, in all human relations.
There are things to know and there are understandings to have about other people and about relationships with them. But all of that understanding springs out of a knowing and a connection to who they are and who we are. It is a question, first of all, of who is present. And in knowing who is present and connecting with who is present, and coming into that deeply—in ourselves, first of all, coming into the presence of Being—we can feel that same presence in one another and know that we’re ultimately not only connected but there is one presence in us all and in all creation. When we know that, that is the beginning of all wisdom. And the lack of that knowing is the beginning of all ignorance.
At Sunrise Ranch we have recently published a document which I’ve shared on this trip with people that we’ve met with, and it speaks of the philosophy of Sunrise Ranch and speaks of that philosophy as honoring Universal Being, honoring the Being in all things and all people, and ultimately in ourselves. In St. Agnes, in the service this morning, I reveled in the practice of a true Christian faith—that faith as it was originally taught by Jesus, as it was originally known by him and practiced by him. It was a faith based in a knowing of Universal Being. And I felt, in St. Agnes this morning, that we redeemed that word God that has been so misused, that has been used to refer to a reality far distant from who we are, far distant from this planet, up in the sky someplace, unattainable in experience and by connection for us as human beings.
People think and speak of using the name of the Lord in vain. Using the word God in this way as something separate and disconnected surely is in vain, for it leads noplace. Jesus taught I and my Father are one. And for that word God to have meaning, that surely must be the experience. That experience is only known through an open heart. And where there is an open heart, it cannot help but be known. If you try to think yourself into it, you’ll be thinking a long time, and you won’t be knowing. It’s only as the human mind admits defeat in this regard, admits its total futility, that a person can give up on that attempt and open their heart. The human mind, of itself, doesn’t know God and wasn’t built to. It was made to be an instrument of awareness brought to it by the open heart. And then the mind can be a servant to that knowing—a servant. I do believe we have to admit, perhaps on behalf of all Western civilization, perhaps on behalf of all the so-called developed cultures of the world, that our mind, of itself, is futile and helpless when it comes to the most important things in life; and that its true role is one of accepting the humility of being a servant to a large knowing that only comes to the mind through its friend and partner, which is the open heart.
I want to recall a very ancient teaching that was even before Jesus’ time on earth, Jesus’ life. It is that ancient psalm, attributed to King David but likely from a far earlier time—he may have been the publisher, maybe even the editor, but very likely not the author. I’m speaking of the Twenty-fourth Psalm, in which this knowing of Universal Being was brought so profoundly. And in the minds of most people around the world, the deeper truth of that psalm is hidden in plain sight, shrouded in religious concept and religious idea that fills the human mind, but without the heart connection to the deeper reality being pointed to so clearly.
“The earth is the Lord’s.” The earth is an embodiment of Universal Being. “…the world, and they that dwell therein.” All people, everywhere, no matter how unknowing, no matter how ignorant, no matter how they’re behaving, no matter what has happened in their life, belong to Universal Being. Within all people is Universal Being, the reality that is rightly named as God, as much as that word has been misunderstood. And in fact, all of us together, all of humanity, all of the world, was meant to be the way by which Universal Being could be present in this world. This world does not belong to the human intellect, which is thinking about how it can bend that world to its own will, bend other people to its own will, bend nature to its own will. This world belongs to Universal Being. And the reality of Being is meant to be embodied and manifested in this world.
I think of that prayer of Jesus where he so clearly spoke to this: “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” Here is the exact same message as the Twenty-fourth Psalm: that in this world, on earth, the reality of Universal Being is meant to be present, the will of Universal Being is meant to be done, and the home of Universal Being, referred to as heaven, the kingdom, is meant to be present right here on earth. Oneness is the truth. But there can be no oneness, there cannot be connection leading to oneness, without the courage of an open heart.
This, I know, is what our world needs now from us—not us as smart human beings, even spiritual human beings, who are going to figure this all out. The world needs us as Universal Being incarnate and in expression through our glorious humanity. And our humanity does become glorious when the Being of who we are is in full and free expression through it. But how does that ever happen without an open heart? When that does happen, we put ourselves in touch with the wisdom of Universal Being, which is our wisdom. And our mind can function intelligently and brilliantly and creatively in that context.
So I appreciate the opportunity to share this around the world. Love to all my friends and family at Sunrise Ranch. I miss you deeply. Love to my friends around the world, many of whom I have met and know person-to-person, and many whom I haven’t met, but I believe we know each other through an open heart regardless—being-to-being, love-to-love, having the courage to extend that love which knows no boundaries, no distance, no space that could separate. And as we are connected and one throughout the world, we can feel and know the reality of heaven, the kingdom, coming into our own experience and coming into the world.

Caught in Traffic...

So here I am 'caught' in some kind of traffic stoppage on the interstate...

It is the perfect time to be in the present and watch our reactions and responses.
  • I can feel frustrated or angry because this stoppage has created an inconvenience in my life... I "have" to be there in 15 minutes.... so I get all worked up and completely resist the situation... maybe swearing at some unknown cause... others have started honking and their impatience is felt to the bone... the extreme thought is that "Life" is against me and the next step is to blame the Universe... this we may call the reactive response...
  • I might wonder if there is an accident ahead... and even send up a prayer for those who may be hurt if that is the case... we can call this the curiosity response...
  • If I see an exit, I may take that and explore a new route or go another known way... this can be labeled the active choice response...
  • I may also accept what is in the present moment... and realizing I have no control over changing the situation, can relax into simply being... we might call this the Being response...
Of course, we may go through all of these responses or reactions and more all in a very short time...

Accepting "what is" in the present moment is the path to conscious living... seeing and catching our responses... being aware of our reactions, frees us to choose a different response... many reactions emerge from a specific attachment to an expectation... "I want to be on time for the appointment in 15 minutes" ... "I hate to be late" ... any situation is grist for the mill of learning... when we notice we are emotionally reacting or mentally withdrawing, we can use this as a teachable moment of self-guiding. What is it I am attached to at this time? What were my expectations?

Everything that occurs in life can bring us back to the present moment... the now of conscious living... even being caught in traffic...or being in line... can provide some meditative moments to "Be" and enjoy the Life we are... noticing how Life is continuing to breathe through us over and over again... returning the center of stillness in the midst of all that is going on around us...

Blessings and Love,
John

THE PRECIOUSNESS OF BEING

THE PRECIOUSNESS OF BEING

by Eckhart Tolle ...Reprinted from Eckhart Tolle's Findhorn Retreat: Stillness Amidst the World, © 2006 by Eckhart Tolle, Eckhart Teachings Inc.

We're here to find that dimension within ourselves that is deeper than thought.

This teaching isn't based on knowledge, on new interesting facts, new information. The world is full of that already. You can push any button on the many devices you have and get information. You're drowning in information.

And ultimately, what is the point of it all? More information, more things, more of this, more of that. Are we going to find the fullness of life through more things and greater and bigger shopping malls?

Are we going to find ourselves through improving our ability to think and analyze, and accumulate more information, more stuff? Is "more" going to save the world? It's all form.

You can never make it on the level of form. You can never quite arrange and accumulate all the forms that you think you need so that you can be yourself fully. Sometimes you can do it for a brief time span. You can suddenly find everything working in your life: your health is good; your relationship is great; you have money, possessions, love, and respect from other people.
But before long, something starts to crumble here or there, either the finances or the relationship, your health or your work or living situation. It is the nature of the world of form that nothing stays fixed for very long - and so it starts to fall apart again.
The voice in the head that never stops speaking becomes a civilization that is obsessed with form, and therefore knows nothing of the most important dimension of human existence: the sacred, the stillness, the formless, the divine. "What does it profit you if you gain the whole world and lose yourself?"
It has been said that there are two ways of being unhappy: not getting what you want, and getting what you want. When people attain what the world tells us is desirable - wealth, recognition, property, achievement - they're still not happy, at least not for long. They're not at peace with themselves. They don't have a true sense of security, a sense of finally having arrived.
Their achievements have not provided them with what they were really looking for - themselves. They have not given them the sense of being rooted in life, or as Jesus calls it, the fullness of life. The form of this moment is the portal into the formless dimension. It is the narrow gate that Jesus talks about that leads to life. Yes, it's very narrow: it's only this moment.
To find it, you need to roll up the scroll of your life on which your story is written, past and future. Before there were books, there were scrolls, and you rolled them up when you were done with them.
So put your story away. It is not who you are. People usually live carrying a burden of past and future, a burden of their personal history, which they hope will fulfill itself in the future. It won't, so roll up that old scroll. Be done with it.
You don't solve problems by thinking; you create problems by thinking. The solution always appearswhen you step out of thinking and become still and absolutely present, even if only for a moment. Then, a little later when thought comes back, you suddenly have a creative insight that wasn't there before.
Let go of excessive thinking and see how everything changes. Your relationships change because you don't demand that the other person should do something for you to enhance your sense of self. You don't compare yourself to others or try to be more than someone else to strengthen your sense of identity.
You allow everyone to be as they are. You don't need to change them; you don't need them to behave differently so that you can be happy.
There's nothing wrong with doing new things, pursuing activities, exploring new countries, meeting new people, acquiring knowledge and expertise, developing your physical or mental abilities, and creating whatever you're called upon to create in this world. It is beautiful to create in this world, and there is always more that you can do.
Now the question is, Are you looking for yourself in what you do? Are you attempting to add more to who you think you are? Are you compulsively striving toward the next moment and the next and the next, hoping to find some sense of completion and fulfillment?
The preciousness of Being is your true specialness. What the egoic self had been looking for on the level of the story - I want to be special - obscured the fact that you could not be more special than you already are now. Not special because you are better or more wretched than someone else, but because you can sense a beauty, a preciousness, an aliveness deep within.
When you are present in this moment, you break the continuity of your story, of past and future. Then true intelligence arises, and also love. The only way love can come into your life is not through form, but through that inner spaciousness that is Presence. Love has no form.

Life’s Basic Dynamics…

A few thoughts about Life’s basic dynamics…
Through the stained glass filter of John Hutchinson

Life Energy

We are alive and conscious…now…We are aware that we are aware… Life is One Sacred Interwoven Spirit…

Awareness

Beyond all the roles and various identities we may entertain, we are pure awareness… One with Being… We are always more than we think we are….

Attention

What we focus upon tends to grow and expand… when we do not consciously choose our focus, we are controlled by unconscious dynamics from past and collective sources, along with the requirements of survival…

Will

We are humans, Being and Doing… We act, respond, and react… We are “deciders” and the lead ‘acter’ on our journey… co-creators on the path…When we do not consciously choose our response, we react and are controlled by unconscious dynamics from past and collective sources… sometimes referred to as shadow or dark energies…

Intention

Conscious intention motivated from Love and Awareness provides guidance and energy to move and act in accordance with that chosen direction… Intention from the depth of our heart provides a passionate and enthusiastic drive, energy, and ambition in a determined direction…

Love

Consciousness in the present moment provides the opportunity to respond with loving kindness that respects the Oneness of Life everywhere, in all ways and all times… Doing good while harming no one or nothing…

Yes

Energy that provides affirmation and growth… the answer to most questions and decisions can be sensed intuitively as a ‘yes’ if it is aligned with our deepest and highest purpose, values, and intention…

No

Energy that can limit and move us in a different direction than the one we are considering or asked to follow… the answer to most questions and decisions can be sensed intuitively as a ‘no’ if it does not align with our deepest and highest purpose, values, and intention…

Physical Body

Our body, including senses and sensations are provided for survival and continuation of the physical form on Spaceship Earth…with all its pleasures and pains… We have a physical body and we are more than our body…

Emotions

We have emotions and we are more than our emotions… emotions serve as a useful tool which are often a reflection of how our own worldview, beliefs, wishes, and expectations interact with what is happening around us… focus on ‘what is’ with  awareness and acceptance provides opportunity to make wise choices…

Thinking

We have mental abilities and we are more than our egoic mental activity… The mind is a useful tool of survival and functioning every day… When controlled by unconscious patterns and dynamics, the mind can justify any action… Consciously focusing our mind can provide expanding creativity and growth…

Intuition

We have access to information that is outside of the physical senses which can be experienced as hunches, pops, psychic knowing, premonition, ESP…it may be through the psychic cords of connections to close family members and can also be connection to other more global unseen sources… It is often referred to as the realm of spirit… We all have intuition capabilities and we are more than our intuition…

Unconscious

The unconscious refers to all information, energy dynamics, and patterns of which we are not aware… they may be from previous experience in our individualized or personal experience… they may be from the past and ongoing collective unconscious… and they be from what we might call the “superconscious” or higher more “spiritual” energies that may be outside of our awareness…

Superconscious

We are and have access to an expanded realm with higher and more inclusive energies which may include, Primary Life Energy, Spiritual Source Love, Wisdom, Joy, Peace, Stillness, Beauty, and more… The expansion into the superconscious may be accessed at times through sudden trauma, dreams, imagery, intuition, visions, and also more naturally through practicing contemplation, meditation, and other methods to still the egoic or person mental activity.

Higher Self

There is an aspect to our psyche that seems, for the most part, to be just a bit above our normal personal consciousness…. It can be thought of as our higher personal and spiritual guide… It is our internal source of love and wisdom and is our synthesizing center… when we pray or attempt to receive answers, we can visualize our energy center as the sun above our body… At times I assume this Higher Self aspect of our psyche or soul is a personal liaison with the Life Source… it is like a transformer and transducer that steps up and down the communication of energy to and from Source… and translates that energy into meaningful symbols in the form of images sounds, words, and sensations…

Unseen Guides

We can also call these entities/energies, “guardian angels,” or even “ETs,” or whatever name you have learned… There is an assumed always-present aspect of the unseen world that often only makes itself present to our awareness when it is truly needed… For those of us who have experienced this ‘realty’ there is no question that we can assume this with a solid amount of certainty…

Source

There are many names and labels provided for that ‘Mystery’ of Life which I will  describe as The Oneness of Life Energy, Great Spirit, Father/Mother God, ALL that IS, Being, The Nothingness that is Everything, Great Mystery, The Manufacturer and Distributor of the Cosmic Glue called Love, One… and, of course, all the names the various world religions have provided through the specific societal and cultural milieu within the ‘nows’ of their times…

Time and Space

When we experience premonitions and receive intuitive pops about others located in a different place, we experience the expansion of consciousness beyond time and space… We understand that ‘Time and Space’ are useful in the functioning of our daily lives and that they are also and fundamentally illusory creations for life in the 3rd dimensional world…

The Present Moment (Now)

We remember other nows and we project with imagination into future nows… Yet the only real ‘time’ in this present moment… we spend so much energy either reliving the past or project our fears and hopes into the future, that we lose consciousness in this present moment… It seems one of our main purposes is to become fully here in the ‘NOW’ …in our body on this planet, until we are not… I might add, bringing through our form the essence of Love in this present moment…

What other Life basics would you like to add?

Beyond This and That

Sometimes I don't know where I am
Sometimes I don't know who
I am...

Then there are moments of connection
to LIFE
to a sense of Oneness
to trees and squirrels
and brooks and maggies

Sometimes I think
and figure I am this or that

Sometimes I feel
happy or sad
glad or not this or that
numbed by thinking
this and that

Then life happens and it's all Life
This beingness
typing letters and symbols and
telling a story of what was
what might be

Then remembering to forget
about this and that
and sit in the momentous silence
in between this and that...

Remembering to be
Being
Here
Now
Always

beyond this and that
infinitely beyond

and it's all exactly what it is
whatever that may be
beyond any interpretation
or distortion

Mystery Moment
Again
and Again
Now
and Now
and Now

Relationships in 2012 & Beyond

"Love is a state of being.
Your love is not outside your body;
it is deep within you.
You can never lose it,
and it cannot leave you.
It is not dependent on some other body,
some external form."

~ Eckhart Tolle, in Practicing the Power of Now, p.72

Many people are in a relationship with a partner. Others are open to a new relationship. We are all in relationships of one form or another with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc.

The words of Eckhart Tolle ring true and we must tap into the inner Source and resource of Love if we are to have a sense of inner peace and acceptance. Whatever you may call this inner Source of Loving Life Energy, it seems to be the key to what is labeled "self-esteem"..."self-worth"... "self-love"... which in my opinion is really an acceptance of the Love of "God"..."Goddess"... "Source" to ourselves. It involves coming to a realization that Life is One and we are all much more than individuals; we are a part of the unity of all that is.

The core of Love at the innermost part of our being is Being itself. It is from this centered space that we can be most in relationship without the neediness or codependency that can take us into the land of the lost... or at least feeling lost.

Centered in the love within our soul can be compared with coming home to a true sense of integrity within which provides a foundation or reference to respond with loving kindness, rather than reacting from some egoic concept, expectation, want, or other form of attachment.

Of course, we are all human 'beings' and are in a universal learning laboratory of sorts. Therefore many interactions within relating with others will provide lessons. It seems to work out best when all the people involved are at least open to learning and growing; an openness to possibilities.

When we look outside ourselves for something to fill a void within our soul, we will most likely find disappointment around one of the corners. Now it is true that there are experiences that can only result in satisfaction as we are in relationship with others. The natural human needs for social contact, as well as sensual, sexual, touchy-feelly contact... the touch or hug as well as the companionship and sharing of life experiences... they are all the wonderful interactions we share with others. We also partner for other purposes of specific cooperative missions, raising a family, business opportunities, just plan fun, and many more.

LOVE is an inside-out job! Love is something we can feel within and share. When I truly am in touch with that energy of Source love, then there is a sense of respect for all of Life; and a love for all that comes into my sphere of consciousness. Others who may not be in touch with that "Source-Love" in the moment may have wants and expectations and desires that may be different than my own sense of direction, wants, and needs. It is here that something happens that we often label as "conflict." And it is in this moment of difference that the learning moment arises. Unless we choose to avoid  it...deny it... withdraw to some other place or activity... blame the other so we can maintain our own 'pure sense of being right'... all forms of avoidance.

There is much that can be learned in the whole area of "conflict resolution." Because I needed to learn how to deal with conflict and differences, I studied it, practiced it, and became a teacher for peer mediation as well as doing mediations in various settings. Without going into it in depth, there is a necessary shift that needs to occur to find out what we have in common, beyond the differences. And also an acceptance that differences are not wrong, they are just differences. There are ways to communicate with love that are not just venting, blaming, attacking, or controlling through the silent treatment...

We all have our concepts and world views and various ideas about this, that, and everything else. And beyond and beneath all the mental chatter with which we become so easily identified, there is the stillness and the center of Being...of Life... of Love...

If we could only do one thing each day, it seems vital that we visit our "Home" within... visit the Source and Energy of Life... which to me, is the 'Sacred Spirit' and Breath of Life within All that is....

The quickest way for me is simply to be present now... with my breath, the sensations within, the Life Energy streaming through the body at all times.... and as we turn our attention to these other areas the streaming of thoughts may subside to a level that we can be with what is... If other things, like feelings or body tensions, come to the fore, we can notice them and breath into them...accepting all that arises gently letting them come and letting them go... just as our breathing is a sort of death and rebirth with every cycle.... so to is Life... ever new and renewed in this Present Moment...

Much Love,

John

Joy and Beauty

Joy and Beauty -  a Tuesday morning meditation...
"Angel and Essence of Joy, descend upon the earth and our awareness, giving beauty to all beings."
May I set aside old ways of being and seeing to give beauty and joy the space to enter...
May I see beauty and feel the joy of being in this present moment... suspending my thinking and judgments... suspending my thoughts of the past or concerns for tomorrow...
May I enter this moment of emerging energies and allow the feelings of Joy and the sense of beauty and harmony to fill my being and quicken my soul...
Essence of beauty and joy, cleanse what was negative or false from my mind and body that I may add to the vital and positive life energies of my body, being, and the world around me... now...
******
Now, here is a brief reminder you might want to apply today....
What I am suggesting is something that is quite simple and also, for many seems difficult. Perhaps you may not want to do this or you may decide to try it for a day.
Our egoic thinking processes along with all our years of being domesticated by interpersonal and collective groups (our tribes) have produced within us a world view... what we believe about our world and how it operates.
If you choose to do this, I would encourage you to suspend the constructed world view for a day or so by occasionally reminding yourself of the following other possibilities:
  • "I really don't know..."
  • "What I am thinking about the world and my situation right now is most likely incomplete and may be totally inaccurate..."
  • "I do not really know why things are the way they are right now..."
  • "I do not know what is going on in the lives of others or why they are acting in a certain way..."
  • "I do not know if something is actually 'good' or 'bad'..."
Suspending judgments based upon our tribal past can provide a new window for seeing the beautiful in life and experiencing the joy of Being in the Present Moment.
Peace, Beauty, and Joy be with you...
