Love....in the Workplace

Love in the workplace:
Love has many meanings, nuances, and ramifications. When I first went into management work in 1982, I was by necessity thinking about many things in the new adventure. Of course there were all the details that needed to be attended to, the best way to have things run effectively and efficiently, the personnel decisions and issues that arose, and also overall policies and procedures. Being open to the spiritual in Life, I also asked myself how do I translate and inject the energy of Love into the business environment. I concluded that other words were more conducive to the workplace and tended to translate “Love” into “Care”…whether it was caring for the kind of work we were doing… or taking care of customers… or working together in an atmosphere of care and respect for others.

I introduced teamwork and group meetings as a way to help empower each person… give each person a say. And at times people were able to help with issues that were happening in other areas. Of course there was some resistance to group involvement since everyone was used to being told what to do from the top down. When I eventually was fired from this position due to being too “progressive” and having a different philosophy than the owner, these empowerment experiments were cited as a reason… I’m glad I did what I did, even if it was not appreciated... it seemed the right thing to do. And it didn’t stop me from getting other jobs after that.

Caring in the workplace can go a long way from how we treat each other to how we approach our tasks. This seems a practical form of love that respects others and works toward the common good. Of course top down dictatorships and other hierarchical systems are somewhat easier in the short run, but usually must use some form of fear factor as a motivator… “You do as I say or else”… either stated or implied… It employs a “power-over” model rather an “empower-with” approach.

So how do you allow Love’s present energy to flow in your place of work?

What does respecting others mean in practical terms?

What percentage of talking to listening are we practicing?

What others actions and attitudes help to bring “Love “ to everyday situations?

If love is important to you, how do you choose to be it and manifest it?

Trouble accepting or giving love...?!?

Here is another ramble from brother John in Denver…. I call it a ramble because it is a way of teasing out something that has popped in to my consciousness and I don’t have a clear or concise picture of what I want to say…. An exploration through a somewhat stream of stained glass consciousness….

So what came up was how often I and perhaps others cannot let love in….. and have trouble receiving love and caring expressed by others… and also have trouble loving myself…ourselves… in some way…

I realize this particularly at times when I can love myself, others and the world around me. It becomes clearer that the times I cannot love myself or accept love from others are times when I am lost in some negative trance of past recordings, memories, regrets… on and on…. I’m sure most have had the experience of getting lost in the negative spiral of the mental jungle that finds us going down “the rabbit hole” caught in those negative thoughts… mostly from the past…. That we rehearse and replay…

It culminates in feelings of unworthiness… I’m bad in some way… not worthy or good enough to be loved… Of course, our background experiences can make these rabbit holes deeper at times… and if we do not have some way to break the trance, we can live in the low and imploding energy until we use most of our energy to resist life energy coming through us… this has been labeled by many as depression… when in reality it takes a lot of energy to resist the natural flow of Life energy trying to flow though our being and form….

We all have our favorite negative tapes we play… we rehearse and replay the so-called ‘failures’ of the past or when we did not live up to our own or someone else’s expectations or projections of who we should be…

And really what happens with me is that I become lost in the maze of endless thought patterns that keep me detached from being present now…. Of course we can be present in our thoughts and egoic mental gymnastics… and this is a form of being conscious but not really present… So in this sense I guess I would see being present as being aware in the moment beyond the feelings and thoughts and really in this present moment of now.

How in the world do we get here from the rabbit holes and negative tapes? Well, it is probably different for each of us in some ways. For me, I often find myself getting deeper into the pit and at least being aware that I am in a resistive mode toward life. This awareness in the moment gives me the opportunity to make a choice to stay in the trance, which has somewhat been recognized, or to do something different. The practice of awareness…. Of seeing and identifying what is, often leads to the memory of other times of being in a different state…. Changing states some would call it…

“Letting go” are two words that are often used to describe the changing states process…

Acceptance of what was…of what is… and moving our conscious awareness from then to now… letting go of the past and re-entering this present moment…

When I have found a rabbit hole, I can go back through my entire life history and through the lens of the pit will see everything in a negative light… Of course there are times when we need to deal with and heal past negative energies, situations, relations, etc… we all have done some things along the way that we might do differently in this moment if we had it to do over again. Yet, it does not really help to say we are all in the same boat or alike in this general way, since I have to deal with my life and my experiences, and my own healing… as you need to do your own work and healing…

One of the signs of a rabbit hole approaching for me is if I catch myself comparing my life to that of others. Right away we can get into a “not good enough” or failure mode since we can always find someone’s life or situation “better” than our own…. With all our expectations and projections thrown in.

The only thing that breaks this trance for me is to return to the present moment with a deep sense of acceptance of what was and what is… Am I okay right now? Is my life okay today? From this point we can make decisions that we need to make in the moments as they arise. From a greater awareness in this present moment, I can see and choose the best I can… and this is enough….

Decisions made in the past were mostly done in the best possible way, only to be labeled “bad” or “wrong” when the outcome was not what we intended, wanted, and/or expected. So the art of labeling things in a negative way develops after the actual decision and action… and the tendency to label in negative ways may also be supported through models in our past who we caught in negative patterns and lost in their own pain and past…

Everything effects everything… our past experiences… the examples and models of childhood… and the values we were taught or have come to hold are all part of what makes up our uniqueness…

It seems that expectations provide a level of hope and anticipation… and they also provide an opportunity for disappointment and suffering of some sort. Can we hope and also hold that hope with a lightness that comes up short of being attached to an outcome. I have often written and said to “expect the unexpected” which of course we cannot do since we do not know what the unexpected future holds. But for me it suggests that no matter where our minds go regarding future events, hopes and fears, we know that we do not know and must see and deal with events as they come into our lives. We make plans and of course Life happens in its own course… Am I willing and able to accept this uncertainty. If I don’t then I am sure to be humbled back into reality since I do not control Life through my egoic wishes and wants.

The complexity of the maze of our mental energies can be overwhelming… I guess I would go back to the beginning of this ramble… the issue of not being able to receive and give love which seems to stem from issues, as labeled in modern psychological terms, issues of low self-esteem and low self-worth… If we did not grow up in a garden where these aspect were nurtured and tended, then we are left to find ways to nurture ourselves and grow our sense of value…. Of healthy self-love and acceptance… of the ability to be open to others by giving and receiving love… by caring and tending to others as well as ourselves.

I have found moments in life when I have realized I am not “bad”… and have come to see others as not “bad” as well…. I have opened to the acceptance that “good” and “bad” are just terms and interpretations, of projections and judgments… yet at the feeling level of being, they can be very real and act as filter on all we do.

For some of us, it takes a moment by moment vigilance… keeping an “eye” open for the rabbit holes and also for the rainbows… both are part of the mystery we call Life. To deny the dark valleys and only focus on the mountaintops can be limited in our understanding of Life’s fullness.

So, for those who dare to travel dark valleys from time to time, I would say, you are not alone and to always chose Life...

What's Love Got To Do With It?

I wrote the following article in October of 2012 and recently came across it again... I am posting it again as a reminder to myself and perhaps it will stir some energies in others as well... jh

“What’s Love Got To Do With It?”

“A life without love is a waste. ‘Should I look for spiritual love, or material, or physical love?’… Don’t ask yourself this question…  Discrimination leads to discrimination. Love doesn’t need any name, category or definition. Love is a world itself. Either you are in, at the center …or you are out, yearning.”  ~ Shams Tabrizi

How is it that sometimes we touch Love’s center or perhaps better said we feel the oneness of Love’s center in all things… and at other times we are off-center, in a space of yearning, which can lead to “looking for Love in all the wrong places”… looking to others to provide love to us?

Love that expects something in return is most likely a need and desire within our psyche that is not really love. The inner child always wants to be loved. A part of us always wants to be loved. But what is that desire? Could it be a longing or homesick feeling for the true self and Love Center that is our connection with Source, with God, with Primary Life Energy?

We can experience Love in a spiritual or transcendent sense which lifts us to a place of self acceptance… to a sense of ‘okayness’ within. This energy of Love may come through any number of ways. There are few words to describe this expansion of heart energy. And how do so many become seemingly detached from this primary life energy source? I suspect in some ways it is domesticated out of us in the process and demands of surviving in our environments.

As newborns we show up and are emotionally open and vulnerable to the actions and energies of those to whom we are dependent for survival. The quality of Love a newborn receives from others is dependent on the degree to which the caregivers are centered in Love or lost in their own pain-bodies from their own past experience. So, we can see how it is quite complex from our first breath. And from day one our personality is affected through our environment and mixes with the predispositions we bring with us through genetics and whatever other factors may be involved. Certainly from a spiritual perspective we can suggest that there may be some pre-birth contracts, purposes, or plans that we bring with us when we enter this 3rd dimension in physical form.

What if, before birth, we also were one with the Love Center of Life’s Source, whatever we may call that or however we may wish to imagine it. It must be quite a shock to show up in the chaos that often surrounds the birth experience after being in the Universal Love Center, even before womb-time. I realize this is all speculation, even though some declare it as more than that.

Now, let us suppose we flash forward several decades or so and we find ourselves in various types of relationships. We connect naturally through family, through work, through interests, through school, through social events, and by happenstance, or as some would say, synchronicity.

So there are many different types of relationships. When we look at the relationships between people who wish to be partners we also find different reasons and rhythms of attraction and connection. At one level, two people may connect for a physical relationship, simply to enjoy the pleasures of our human body. Some people may also connect at a certain stage in life to form and generate a family within the social norms and expectations and through their own want or need to do so.

From a psycho-spiritual perspective, partners may be attracted to one another for different reasons;

·       Attracted through physical appearances;

·       Attracted due to similar interests, values, ideas;

·       Attracted by personality type, sometimes similar, sometime opposite;

·       Attracted to another’s aura or energy;

·       Attracted through chemistry… sensual and sexual energies;

·       Attracted to material life situation, successes, finances, accomplishments, possessions;

·       Attracted to a shared sense of purpose, vision, mission, calling;

What we often do not understand or realize is that we are often attracted to our own projections onto another person according to what we wish for, and in some cases, to what we lack in our own lives. The openness of hope for love with another often blossoms, with or without the projections, into infatuation and acceptance of each other. In many cases, this feeling of Love with another is due to how we feel when we are with them and may easily be combined with shared energies if the two people are sexually engaged. The energy transfer in open sex can often provide a shared desire that feels like a tear when two are physically separated to different locations.

The experience of falling in love and feeling love for another is perhaps the closest we come to heaven on earth, so to speak. To put it another way, the ecstasy of intimacy may mirror the spiritual connection in the present moment of an oneness with Life’s Source and Love Center… or spiritual oneness. Truly the feelings of love in the moment may have a quality of ‘eternity’…’forever’… and timelessness… again, mirroring spiritual Love.

And as most humans know, the projections of partnering and accepting can and usually do change. We discover our imperfect humanness and that our partner was not all that we projected them to be. Our fantasies are broken by real life. Some of the reasons for partnering may have somehow disappeared. The one who was so loved, becomes the one who becomes the object to ‘blame’ for our newly discovered unhappiness… or we fault ourselves for making a mistake… or for not seeing more clearly from the start.

Of course each person has their own version… our own story… and if we tell if long enough, we begin to believe it.

What I say and write is only my opinion. So now that I made that disclaimer, I will continue as if I actually know what I’m talking about. If it is useful for you… good. If you find it does not connect for you, that’s good too. Simply let it go.

It seems that most people have some type of spiritual awakening along the path, even if it is not labeled as a “spiritual awakening.” Many have visited guides, teachers, counselors, ministers, gurus, and others. We have the opportunity to learn at every moment. Most of our striving, trying, and doing are within the context of our social and cultural milieu along with our unique personal development and experience. What remains in the shadow of our unconscious can easily and often does have the tendency to control or at least impact our thinking, feelings, and actions.

The more aware we become… and there is always more to become aware of… the less likely we are to get lost in unconscious attractions, attachments, and behavior. On the other hand, each time we do get lost in the next adventure, it is also ‘grist for the mill’ of learning as we walk along our journey’s path.

It seems to follow that as we open to and experience ‘Source Love’ more directly in our own present experience, the more we can offer love to others in a way that is not looking for something in return. When we are disappointed or feel hurt in a relationship, it is a clear signal that we were expecting something different and were expecting something in return for giving Love…. Another teachable moment… Ideally, it seems that the more two people are actually experienced in Source Love, the more likely they will be able to openly be in and co-create a relationship… Source Love is always here. If we feel something else toward another person, we know we are dealing with some issue within.

Now, to be very, very clear…I hope… this does not mean in any way that we stay in a relationship or abusive situation just because there is love there for the other person. To appreciate that same Source Love first coming to us, we will honor and respect ourselves and move away from that energy that is reactive and abusive because of the shadow aspect of the other… and we must be reminded of the shadow in our own psyche that may have attracted the other… two unconsciously dancing shadows.

As humans and Being, we are complex and have many different energy patterns we carry. Most agree that if we had no imperfections, we would probably be elsewhere! This is to remind myself and others to be gentle on ourselves… to be as aware as possible… to trust our deeper intuition… and to continue to live with loving kindness as our guide.

Sometimes, I receive emails from friends, acquaintances, and others who read something I have said in my blog… and they say how much it hurts to want a relationship so much and yet they feel a bit powerless to actually make it happen… Or they have recently separated from who they thought was “the one”… Or others simply wonder if relationship is actually possible. In all these scenarios it depends a lot on not only how we define relationship, but what we are looking to ‘gain’ by being in a relationship.

I do not know if there is “one” person out there, a soul mate for each person. I suspect it is a bit more complex than that. On the other hand, we are all soul mates of the One Life that is ALL Life… Personally, I sense that the traditional paradigm of a fixed relationship, cemented in time and or space, is something that has been shifting for perhaps 30-40 years. That is part of many of our experiences and yet we may still be clinging to an idea that there is one person ‘out there’ that is perfect for us. It may be so. And I do not live by that ‘concept’ any longer which, for me, seems more of an expansion of my own openness rather than a resignation or loss of hope. It is freeing.

I contend that we must be somewhat together ourselves…FIRST… to the point of not ‘needing’ a relationship to fulfill some internal need for love and acceptance from the outside. When we feel good about ourselves, then we are better able to be present for others without expecting or wanting something in return.

If we truly bring the Source Love that runs to and through us to each moment and each encounter, without expectations or sets of rules about what a relationship should be, we perhaps can be in relationships that are truly timeless.

So the question remains: “How do we consistently connect with Love at the ‘Primary Source’ level?” Many of us know the words or theory or teachings… and yet find ourselves feeling a bit disconnected at times.

This subject has been addressed by most spiritual teachers every-where and every-when. Each of us has to find that wakefulness to the present moment beyond the shadows and blaring noises of both the unconscious energies of the psyche and the constant traffic of our egoic mind... Here are a few thoughts and avenues to consider:

·       Perhaps for some it takes a mindful inquiry into our experiences, feelings, and reactions as we go through the day.

·       Some find it useful to practice some form of meditation or contemplation.

·       Using our cognitive and creative abilities to grow positive thoughts to replace useless negative self-talk can provide a shift in attitude and feelings since thoughts and feelings are intricately entwined.

·       Asking for help from your deepest Source of Love within, from the divine, from your guides and angels… whatever you wish to call the unseen wise ones … can bring intervention and synchronicities.

·       Asking to talk with someone you trust who has the skills and wisdom to help you through some of the learning transitions… perhaps as a guide, counselor, or coach.

·       Explore and discover a way to let go of unwanted emotional states and restore a sense of centeredness;

·       Dreams can provide new information regarding unconscious dynamics and patterns and even connect us to direct messages from the realms of Wisdom and Love

·       Visualization and guided meditation or imagery works for many.

·       Spending time in nature can connect us to the wonderful natural sense of Life’s Oneness, power, and presence. Watching nature can teach us how to ‘be.’

·       There are many specific spiritual schools and religious groups designed to take you through their teachings…which may be helpful for some.

·       Many have experienced an opening through creativity, art, books, and stories of others.

There are always an infinite number of possibilities and an infinite number of possible outcomes based on the decisions and circumstances of our journey.

As long as we are looking to receive love from others and from a romantic relationship without the Love being present within that brings peace and acceptance, we will find disappointment. Relationships if they are to be satisfying, will take striving… that’s work… just as the path of being a spiritual warrior or warrioress takes work.

Learning the art of Present Moment living will help being present now and means learning to actually let go of yesterday’s emotional disappointments, hurts, pain, regrets, perceived failures, etc…. In addition it means letting go of any anxious and fear-based thoughts of tomorrow that our egoic mind wishes to conjure up to cast its spell and keep us away from this Present Moment of Now! The art of letting go of the past and future is liberating since we are no longer being controlled in the present moment. Letting go often involves forgiveness… forgiving ourselves and forgiving others…

Its work and it’s worth it. And it’s also simple… we just need to choose to do it.

So, what’s Love got to do with it?

Everything!

Plug consciously in to the One Love and we can channel and give that Love to the world around us and to the people in our lives. May Love be our soulmate…and maybe someone will show up who also is mated to Love!

Warm wishes, John

PS.... [8-3-14] Yes, we can love ourselves and all of life  without judgment or expectations from a centered space of spiritual or unconditional love and acceptance. As this become filtered through our personality, ego, and preferences, we also need to make choices and act with a decisive energy of kindness and respect for others, our self, and all of Life... and the beat goes on... What is Love? - by Carol Dombrose

This is an article that Carol Dombrose wrote about a year before she passed on in 2013. Carol embodied an energy of unconditional Love as much as anyone I have met. She was a good friend and truly Love's Serving Being... jh

What is love?

“There is a light that shines beyond all things on Earth, beyond us all, beyond the very highest heavens.  This is the light that shines in our heart."     ~~ Chandogya Upanished

When all the games and dramas and stories are done and you reach a level of awareness and awakening where you can see beyond them all into a deeper level of experience – only then can you begin to know real love.

You can love only when you do not possess or when you are not envious or not greedy or when you can be honoring and respectful no matter what the situation; only when you can have compassion that comes from a loving heart and not from the mind.  When you have consideration for all those in your presence --- only then are you touching love.

Love is not just something that happens to you, it is a certain, special way of being alive.  Love is not something we can do.  It is not something that we can cultivate or practice.  True love is a happening, it is becoming a part of the river that is flowing, full of force and energy that overwhelms us.  When it happens it happens.  It is something that is so real and true and all encompassing that it literally takes over, it move us into a very high state of consciousness where there is only it.  We drop the stories, and all the illusions.

When everything else stops, and we move into this state, then we will experience true love.  We move from a unique and separate individual to one who is a part of the magnificent whole where there is no separation but rather a knowing and feeling and understanding that this whole is life.  We move from loving in the mind to experiencing love in the heart.

Love is where there is neither one nor many, where there is only love.  It is here that we can experience unconditional peace, bliss and happiness.  And as we are all learning, love is not something we can get or do.  Love is the benediction of the Divine.

We find love right in our own heart.  When we know our own heart, we remember who we are, we remember the light that we are. We need only to look inside our own heart to know love at a deeper level.

I felt that connection to life when I was 5 years old and the oak tree in my front yard was my friend.  I talked to the tree and took care of its leaves in the Fall when they fell to the ground.  The whole world was mine.  I could live in peace, give love to my doll, build castles in the sand, have a tree for my friend.  The whole world was a place to love.

But then as I grew and was trying to live the life I was taught to live, I can see now that my spiritual self – my connection to love that I wasn’t even aware of was keeping me on the path I was meant to live.

A defining moment in my life was the death of my husband in 2001.  He was such a loving man I thought that my time with him had taught me all there was to know about love.  Yet after his death, I kept hearing this call to go deeper into love.  I was not really sure what that meant, but I felt pulled into a deeper connection to the Source of love.

Within months of Larry’s death I was led to an old farmhouse and 3 acres of land in Strongsville where I started what is now called Angel House:  Life Enrichment Center.  As a Psychologist, just talking to people about their problems didn’t seem to be enough.  We needed to go deeper into who they were, into their creative self, their spiritual self.  This is what I wanted to provide at Angel House, a safe place for people to explore the deeper self.  I did that by providing in addition to counseling, classes in the creative and healing arts.  I didn’t think of Angel House as also being my place to explore.  But this is where my journey into the dimension of deeper love began.  And to my surprise, I have found that the journey led me right back into my own heart.

Inside your heart is where you can find the Divine within.  Go there when you feel afraid or uncertain, you will find comfort, go there when you feel good and celebrate together with the Divine within you.  Know that you can never be separated from this Divine light.  It is part of you, it is who you are, you are never alone.  We are not separate from our Source.

The Pulse of Spirit - "Knowing Through the Heart"

I recently was working on an article about values in politics. At one point I mention how important I feel it is for there to be a balance between head and heart in political discourse and policy making. David Karchere makes the point quite clearly during this message delivered in May, 2014. - jh

THE PULSE OF SPIRIT

Knowing Through the Heart
May 12, 2014

From a transcription of David Karchere’s words on an international video conference on May 4, 2014
Greetings, everyone. David Karchere here, from North Reddish, England. Here at St. Agnes Church we’ve had a wonderful day with Clive Larsen and friends. And I can tell you, if you haven’t been hugged by the good people of St. Agnes Church, you haven’t been hugged. There’s such a spirit of love in this community! And I’ve been away from home, traveling, long enough that I miss my home. I miss Sunrise Ranch and my family and friends. And at the same time, as I walked into the church this morning, I felt I was coming home.
It’s said that home is where the heart is. Home is where the spirit of love lives. And wherever there are people who embody the spirit of universal love and let it flow freely, there is a true home. So I’m so grateful for what is here and what’s among people, wherever they are, all over the world, where the true home is present and known. And from that true home there is altitude and there is a transmission. There is a tower of faith, a tower of reality, and therefore a transmission from that tower.
For that transmission to come from us, it takes courage. It takes something deliberate. And we might take the attitude about people in our life, “Well, they know I love them.” Do they? It’s so obvious that love is something that is of the heart. It is something that’s transmitted through the heart. And while there’s a vital part that our conscious mind has to play in our spirituality, ultimately, without a heart that’s open and is transmitting the frequency of love, how do we truly connect? How do we connect upward to the larger reality of Being that we are a part of? And how do we connect to other people and to the world?
I’ve been thinking about the role that our human mind plays in our life. And there’s a reason to have a human intellect. It’s vital in all kinds of ways, including the practicality of living life on Planet Earth and in the world in which we live. So the human intellect is vital, but it is no substitute for an open heart. The human intellect can be all about the questions of “what” and “how”: What should happen here? What do I want to happen? What’s going on? And how? How do I make happen what I want to happen? How do I make things work out? What’s the technology, what’s the method? The human mind is good for those kinds of questions.
But the human mind alone is very bad for an even more essential question. And until that more essential question is answered, all the discussion and all the thought about how we do things only lead down a path of destruction. It leads to things like atom bombs and global warming, and wars in Iraq and many other places around the globe. It leads to man’s inhumanity to man. It leads to the rape and destruction of the planet, because only when a person has not answered the “who” of life could they be so seemingly wise as to invent all this technology that we have in our world but at the same time so incredibly ignorant that they don’t know what technology is for. They don’t know the basics for creating a true technology, a technology that would truly serve humanity, that would truly serve this planet and not destroy it.
That most essential question is a question of “who.” The human intellect looks at the question of who: “Who am I?” and in a very intellectual way reflects on the human experience, a human life. Philosophers reflect on human life and ask, “Who am I? Who are we?” and pose that as the great existential question.
There’s a story familiar to many of us. It’s a Bible story. In this story there’s a depiction of the human intellect, the human mind in all its glory, keeping humanity enslaved. And then there’s also a picture of the knowing of Being, the knowing of the reality of God, the knowing of who one is. That story is the story of Pharaoh and Moses, and Moses setting the people free. When faced with Moses’ demand to let his people go, Pharaoh’s answer is: “I know not your God, and I will not let your people go.” The human intellect all by itself, with all its vaunted wisdom, doesn’t know and will never know of itself the answer to the most important question in life—“Who is present?” The answer to this question brings all wisdom and all truth available to the human experience.
The answer to the question can only be known through the heart. It astounds and stupefies the human mind that it can’t know who it is, and it can’t know God. It can’t experience oneness with other people and connect with other people. And the human intellect can’t really connect with this planet, because that knowing and that connection happens only through the open heart. The connection to one another is through the heart, and therefore the knowing of one another is through the heart. The connection with this planet and with all of nature, and therefore the knowing of this planet and the understanding of this planet, is through the heart. And yes, there are things to understand intellectually, but true understanding of the mind only comes when there is connection through the heart.
People make all kinds of attempts to connect with God. Intellectually, we may think that if we meditated long enough, if we prayed long enough, maybe if we practiced yoga long enough, we would connect. Maybe if we confessed enough, said enough repentance, maybe if we studied long enough, maybe if we read long enough, maybe if we went to enough workshops, we would know God. I say no, not ever that way. Not ever.
Through our recent tour in Europe, we have talked about various kinds of courage. There is the courage of performing brave acts, which is the courage of action. That is what we usually think of when we think of courage, and truly that can be courage. And then there is the courage to truly think for yourself, and that is a rare kind of courage. The courage I am addressing now is the courage to open your heart and connect and allow what would come to you in that connection to come to you, to be known by you—to allow what’s available to you from the universe, from other people, from the planet and from God, to come. In that connection we find there is not only something coming to us but there is also something coming from us. There is a knowing and a being known.
So here we are, separated by oceans and miles. You might say we’re always separated by some kind of space; it just depends on how much—seemingly separated by space and many other things, by culture, by personality, by race and gender. I’m asking in this moment whether all of us, connected seemingly by telephone, by Internet and streaming video, can make a different kind of connection right now and perceive through the instrument of the heart the presence of Being, the presence of Being in all people and therefore in each other; the presence of Being in all things, in all human relations.
There are things to know and there are understandings to have about other people and about relationships with them. But all of that understanding springs out of a knowing and a connection to who they are and who we are. It is a question, first of all, of who is present. And in knowing who is present and connecting with who is present, and coming into that deeply—in ourselves, first of all, coming into the presence of Being—we can feel that same presence in one another and know that we’re ultimately not only connected but there is one presence in us all and in all creation. When we know that, that is the beginning of all wisdom. And the lack of that knowing is the beginning of all ignorance.
At Sunrise Ranch we have recently published a document which I’ve shared on this trip with people that we’ve met with, and it speaks of the philosophy of Sunrise Ranch and speaks of that philosophy as honoring Universal Being, honoring the Being in all things and all people, and ultimately in ourselves. In St. Agnes, in the service this morning, I reveled in the practice of a true Christian faith—that faith as it was originally taught by Jesus, as it was originally known by him and practiced by him. It was a faith based in a knowing of Universal Being. And I felt, in St. Agnes this morning, that we redeemed that word God that has been so misused, that has been used to refer to a reality far distant from who we are, far distant from this planet, up in the sky someplace, unattainable in experience and by connection for us as human beings.
People think and speak of using the name of the Lord in vain. Using the word God in this way as something separate and disconnected surely is in vain, for it leads noplace. Jesus taught I and my Father are one. And for that word God to have meaning, that surely must be the experience. That experience is only known through an open heart. And where there is an open heart, it cannot help but be known. If you try to think yourself into it, you’ll be thinking a long time, and you won’t be knowing. It’s only as the human mind admits defeat in this regard, admits its total futility, that a person can give up on that attempt and open their heart. The human mind, of itself, doesn’t know God and wasn’t built to. It was made to be an instrument of awareness brought to it by the open heart. And then the mind can be a servant to that knowing—a servant. I do believe we have to admit, perhaps on behalf of all Western civilization, perhaps on behalf of all the so-called developed cultures of the world, that our mind, of itself, is futile and helpless when it comes to the most important things in life; and that its true role is one of accepting the humility of being a servant to a large knowing that only comes to the mind through its friend and partner, which is the open heart.
I want to recall a very ancient teaching that was even before Jesus’ time on earth, Jesus’ life. It is that ancient psalm, attributed to King David but likely from a far earlier time—he may have been the publisher, maybe even the editor, but very likely not the author. I’m speaking of the Twenty-fourth Psalm, in which this knowing of Universal Being was brought so profoundly. And in the minds of most people around the world, the deeper truth of that psalm is hidden in plain sight, shrouded in religious concept and religious idea that fills the human mind, but without the heart connection to the deeper reality being pointed to so clearly.
“The earth is the Lord’s.” The earth is an embodiment of Universal Being. “…the world, and they that dwell therein.” All people, everywhere, no matter how unknowing, no matter how ignorant, no matter how they’re behaving, no matter what has happened in their life, belong to Universal Being. Within all people is Universal Being, the reality that is rightly named as God, as much as that word has been misunderstood. And in fact, all of us together, all of humanity, all of the world, was meant to be the way by which Universal Being could be present in this world. This world does not belong to the human intellect, which is thinking about how it can bend that world to its own will, bend other people to its own will, bend nature to its own will. This world belongs to Universal Being. And the reality of Being is meant to be embodied and manifested in this world.
I think of that prayer of Jesus where he so clearly spoke to this: “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” Here is the exact same message as the Twenty-fourth Psalm: that in this world, on earth, the reality of Universal Being is meant to be present, the will of Universal Being is meant to be done, and the home of Universal Being, referred to as heaven, the kingdom, is meant to be present right here on earth. Oneness is the truth. But there can be no oneness, there cannot be connection leading to oneness, without the courage of an open heart.
This, I know, is what our world needs now from us—not us as smart human beings, even spiritual human beings, who are going to figure this all out. The world needs us as Universal Being incarnate and in expression through our glorious humanity. And our humanity does become glorious when the Being of who we are is in full and free expression through it. But how does that ever happen without an open heart? When that does happen, we put ourselves in touch with the wisdom of Universal Being, which is our wisdom. And our mind can function intelligently and brilliantly and creatively in that context.
So I appreciate the opportunity to share this around the world. Love to all my friends and family at Sunrise Ranch. I miss you deeply. Love to my friends around the world, many of whom I have met and know person-to-person, and many whom I haven’t met, but I believe we know each other through an open heart regardless—being-to-being, love-to-love, having the courage to extend that love which knows no boundaries, no distance, no space that could separate. And as we are connected and one throughout the world, we can feel and know the reality of heaven, the kingdom, coming into our own experience and coming into the world.
