Is our world going “to hell in a hand-basket?”

We live in a complex and interconnected world. It is a world that has become much smaller in a sense with the 24 hour bombardment of news from every part of our planet. Do we live in a world that is “going to hell in a hand-basket?” Perhaps we are in a period of deterioration. Actually the phrase “going to hell in a hand-basket” probably comes from the practice of catching heads from the guillotine during an execution and taking it away in that fashion… and of course many criminals who were executed were assumed to be “going to hell.” Today’s world sees ideological extremists beheading their neighbors who are identified as the enemy or infidels whose only “crime” is believing something different than their executioner. We have seen this same ideological extremism throughout history not only in the Muslim world but also within Christianity and Catholicism.

If we realistically look at much of the world and its systems these days, there is much dysfunction and not much motivation by those in power to make constructive changes. We have subtly and perhaps not so subtly succumbed to the power, greed, and self-interest of corporate captains, financial directors, and the wealthiest in our world who use money and manipulation to control and enslave the population in confusion, poverty, debt, and corruption in political systems.

There are some of us who wish to do what is right and help make the world a better place. Whatever our background and beliefs may be, we share some basic values which I would suggest include: respect for the interconnected web of life; care and kindness to others, ourselves, and the planet; equal rights and responsibilities; a common sense and decency toward others; cooperation rather than coercion; reasonable and critical thinking to problem-solving rather than extreme ideology and beliefs that divide into categories of “us” and “them.”

Some would prefer to emphasize “individual” rights and freedom while others place the emphasis more on the “collective” and social responsibilities we have as a community. This does not need to be an “either-or” question. We can espouse the rights of all equally, the freedoms we cherish, and the common good.

Yet if we are attached to make the world in our image, we are the same as the 1% who will use whatever it takes to gain control over the planet and its citizens. We can live out our values without being attached to the outcome. We do what we do… we say what we say… not because we think it will “save” or change the world… but because we choose to live out our values and do and say what we think is best and right… no matter what other say or do…

There are many things in life over which we have no control… and yet we always have a choice in how we respond… from the depth of our inner values and human spirit… from our heart and from our intuition and from our mind… And of course, if we have some influence to make changes, then we can choose that course of action.

The world has its own set of values, no matter what the leaders may say. Leaders are also pawns at times of those who hold the purse-strings, the power, and the influence…

Working in organizations and businesses can be frustrating, depending on the culture and principles by which an organization operates. We are prone to avoid real problem-solving by really looking carefully at issues. When the Federal Reserve brought experts in to analyze their process and procedures that led to the “crash” in 2007-8, it wasn’t long before they wanted to ignore the findings and even fired some who dared to tell the truth. Cultures, whether in society or with a business or organization tend to resist change…and wish to keep things as they are… the known, even if dysfunctional, is preferred to the unknown which calls for open creativity, growing, and some chaos in the process…

Margaret Wheatley, in her recent book, “So Far From Home,” suggests we look at what is emerging and be open to it… explore the complexity… and while it may not be going the way we would choose, we can be a positive influence within the process by maintaining our own centeredness and operate out of our identified person values… in the present.

Wheatley is a realist who might say, “Yes, it does seem like the world is going to hell in a hand-basket and we are not going to save the world… yet we continue to act and respond from our own shared values because we can do none other.”
What is our response?
Fight....flight... scream.... hide... deny... protest...  point out everything that is wrong... encourage one another... keep on keepin' on...
I think it needs to begin with detaching enough to identify our own values rather than just reacting. Reflection and clarifying our own internal values helps to provide that centeredness on which to act.  If we identify our values, we can act from a clarity that is not dependent on others or not attached to outcomes. If we are waiting to see the results or the change, then we are still operating out of attachment and will most likely do a fast or slow burn...
I am going to take more time each day to focus on a value or quality that I wish to share in the world on that particular day. And taking time to meditate or whatever you call becoming quiet within continue to be a useful and necessary activity... the busier we are, the more we need a time alone to center our selves for the work we have to do in the world...  It helps bring more clarity and present alertness to the moments of our lives.

Gasland Exposes Corporate Egoic Greed

JH Editorial: "Gasland Exposes Corporate Egoic Greed"

The world continues to expose our brothers and sisters who are dazzling in their mindsets that support greed, secrecy, and outright lies. I am not surprised any longer and know that many remain asleep and unconscious to the deeper spirit of Life Energy that connects all.

I continue to do what I can to stand in the path of injustice and ‘sanctified’ criminality in the guise of corporate expansionism, ‘the greater good,’ and capitalism.

Recently, I viewed a documentary entitled “Gasland” which clearly showed the damaging impact of hydro fracturing… or fracking… that is used to drill wells for natural gas. The system is designed to quickly shatter shale layers and utilizes a variety of toxic chemicals to do so. There was much secrecy in the way this has been done and both minimalization and deceit used in response to complaints. The process can affect our water supplies on a grand scale and is already detrimental to all living things at the local level by what is dumped and evaporated into the air through this mining process.

It was obvious, and even confessed, that politicians will support the oil and gas industry because it provides jobs and dollars. This support turns a deaf ear to real complaints and makes those who have been harmed look as if they are troublemakers. Industry CEOs and spoke ’men’ testified in hearings and repeated the same mantra that the reports were exaggerated and/or unsubstantiated.

If we are given a chance, it seems prudent and essential to place a moratorium on these practices until a full disclosure of impact can be studied. It seems that there is little or no will to do much since there is so much lobbying money from the oil and gas industry to politicians which keeps any form of oversight or protective regulations off the legislative docket.

As I watched “Gasland” I felt a sense of sadness along with about every emotion you could mention…from rage to disappointment to despair to sickness… I needed air… and was thankful that the air outside the theater was at least a bit more pure that of the polluted air surrounding the gas mining wells which creates symptoms in those who breathe it…

I am no longer surprised that corporations, government agencies, politicians, and individuals glide easily from one job to another within these different sectors… all playing the bidding of the industrial and military networks and the banking cartel that controls the wealth. If I were totally cynical, I might say that all is controlled by a few in a totally selfish and egoic manner that has little to no respect for Life except for how it is defined within their locked mindset run by fear, greed, and control… And I am no longer surprised that politicians say what is convenient, that corporate executives carefully script their statements as to not admit any liability, and that banking chairman continue to play a shell game without oversight. It is not a government of , by, and for the people. If it can be called anything it is a game of smoke and mirrors in which actual fascism is presented as participatory democracy so the people can continue to be enslaved.

Anyone who has looked beneath the surface of world events realizes that most wars are all about resources and their attached money. The bankers fund both sides and always win. The rich protect their wealth and their family and friends and care nothing about the rest of LIFE’s beings. Most of us have been manipulated into a false sense of freedom, when in fact we are enslaved through indebtedness to an economic fiat currency system that is doomed to fail and we, as citizens of the USA are the debt holders.

I write this as a statement of what is…as I see it… It has little to do with the Life Spirit that is always free and always the richest source of Love, Joy, and Peace for our human soul. I hope that we will continue to wake up as a species. I hope we will continue to stand peacefully in the way of the destruction of our planet and the Life on it. I also know our beloved mother Earth will survive and possibly thrive… even if it takes a million years after we are gone…

We do live in a world where the ego, both individual and corporate ego, is locked into myths and mindsets and will do anything to protect the egoic realm. It is almost certain that for both individuals and collective systems, there will need to be major cracks occur in the egoic shell for both individual and collective/corporate consciousness to move beyond the sleeping giant of the present.

The present moment is our gift. The energy of Life and Love is our fuel. The joy and peace that resides within and beyond our addiction to thinking provides more than hope… we find our real Life and connection to LIFE SOURCE… to ‘God’… if we can let go of some of the historical definitions…. In the Oneness that is LIFE we see what is and we can stand in a Power that is beyond this world’s egoic obsession with physical and psychological control by others. We can recognize the thoughts and feelings that arise as we watch injustice occur, and we can choose our response from solid ground… beyond the reactions fighting and war and making someone an enemy.

So, today I got up, had breakfast, talked to my friends, and went about my day, pretty much like any other day… I am grateful for Life and Love, for the softness of a kiss, and the warmth of an embrace… thankful for dependent pets and hot soup on a cool day… I am thankful for all who continue to stand in the face of overwhelming odds… I am grateful that we can still Love from our hearts, even those who really do not know what they are doing… They forget and are lost in trances of collective myths that remain in slumber… We can continue to stop them and must, and we can continue to forgive them, for they know not what they do… and we must… if we are to continue to Live with our hearts open.

Don't you just love corporate greed?

I hope not.
The heart and collective soul of the modern world has become as hardened and cold as the concrete and steel of our modern cities. Economic and business practices are structured to produce wealth while ignoring the interconnected web of our Mother Earth.
How can so many justify stripping the land and forests and poisoning the waters and atmosphere with toxic chemicals in the name of a better economy. What kind of thinking would direct the destruction of the intricately entwined systems of life support that may eventually kill the 'dominators' themselves?
There is anger and sadness. The earth mother will survive. But it is wrong to abuse the land and stricken her children through uncommon nonsensical business practices designed by greed and justified by saying it brings money to an area and its people. This is unethical and immoral 'bullshit' promulgated by politicians and corporations that are blind, deaf, and dumb to the crumbling world around us all.
Love demands us to stand in the way of slaughter. If someone has lost control and commits harm against other people, there are laws that guide us to take action. Since the Supreme Court has decided that corporations are people too, does it not follow that business decisions and practices that destroy and abuse the life system of the earth and its inhabitant should receive equal justice and policing.
"Oh, but it will cost too much money if we have regulations and enforcement in place," the 'business leaders' and politicians tell us. "It is not in the interests of good business," they say. They assure us, "we can police ourselves." And how is that working out?  Yes, I know, business leaders and politicians are people too. But if actions of the insane are harming others and the planet, then someone has to stand up and say "ENOUGH"!!! The problem is there are not large enough asylums or enough money to buy the politicians 'will' to do anything about it. And most politicians seem just as insane or unconscious as the nameless 'people' who are corporations... at lest it seems that way.
But most of us are lost in the maze of other interests and feel helpless to effect change. Our system of government seems broken. Even when someone wants to effect change, it is near impossible with some many so-called "legislators" in the pocket and agreeing with the moneyed interests of Big business, Big bankers, and their Lobbyists who always seem to know how to spin things.
It baffles me how so many religious folks can preach 'love' and then continually vote for Big business interests over the welfare of our planet and her people. It is as if they have been separated from their soul as creatures of the Great Mother. Yes, I know that is not a very "christian" term... how about protecting the 'Creator's handiwork.'
I know all religious people do not agree with destroying the earth to make a buck. But enough voters are self-centered enough that they want individual rights over the protection of the planet. And somehow the Big Money Spinners have subtly or otherwise brainwashed many of the religious 'right' to think that unbridled greed and uncaring actions are the same as good business practices...and that individual rights equals "free market capitalism" ...That is like saying to an individual, you can go and do whatever you want to do to get whatever you want.
It may be too late for many structures and life forms in the modern world, but for those who dare to love, we must continue the work of standing up for the protection of the earth and her inhabitants in any peaceful way we can. To do harm would be to escalate the war games of corporate America along with the global multinational web of economic conspirators. For me and a few friends, action with the energies of Peace and Love remain the answer.

Beyond Greed, 'Stuff', and Ego

Sundance Center Op-Ed, Mountville, PA

Tuning In Beyond Ego
by John Hutchinson
Why are some shocked at the daily exposures of greed and deed that is reported from around the world every minute of every day… acts based upon our ego desires and anxiety …

Survival is a natural instinct and state of all creatures of the earth. Humans have the consciousness to create fear and pain from thought and fantasies that are not real. We embellish and hold onto to past occurrences as if they are still happening… replaying them in our thoughts … plus reinforcing and strengthening the memory traces through continual story-telling to anyone who will pay attention… We can endlessly consider all possible future scenarios to worry about…

Of course we know our physical life on earth is on a lease… and someday the lease will run out… so there is always an underlying real body-fear of extinction… the body knows it’s on a temporary gig…

All of us haven fallen short of the mark of self-less and unconditional love… and we act in ways that expose our fears about not having enough or being enough… our frustrations and anger when we do not get our way or what we think is owed to us… When our expectations are not met we react with behaviors from disappointment and sadness to rage and violence…

We act from our forgetfulness that we are all part of the Oneness of Life… the ego operates as if it - ‘I’ - am god…or the only one that matters… The ego structure is focused on the defense and survival security of the personality… the individual…

The child finds itself in a foreign land and in a place where there is less than total empathic love… To the extent that the caregivers and surrounding family members carry some energies of past pain, regret, and hurt… along with fear, worry, and dread about future fantasies… plus some amount of desire, wants, and expectations… to that extent, the child inherits negative energies that are absorbed from the home environment…

Many times the child must develop less than healthy coping mechanisms that learn to manipulate and get what it needs or wants… thus the survival personality begins its journey of development… In addition to personal predispositions, the trial and error of finding what works continues to add to patterns that develop and even sub-personalities that learn to deal with different circumstance…

The child is split off from its true Self and Life Spirit in the necessity to survive… This results in a sense of separateness and disconnection from Life and it finds some place to connect and get lost in… a social identity… an accepted member of the family, community… a hero or star… or a loser or outcast… some role… or group identity that provides some sense of connection… All of these attempts eventually lead to a dissatisfaction, emptiness, or just a sense that something is missing or “Is this all there is?”

So the natural need to survive gets translated into every conceivable act that we see on a daily basis… Why is it that, what seems to be 98% of the time, we continually broadcast and watch the conflicts, violence, sexual exploits, celebrity addictions, and negative win-lose energies happening across the globe? We continue to strengthen what is wrong rather than focus on inclusive solutions.

Governance, for the most part in the US has degenerated into an addictive sickness that has nothing to do with solving problems for many… it is a game of us and them… as if they are unruly children fighting on the playground at an elementary school…

One commentators insisted we must define and isolate the ‘enemy’ so we can “bomb the hell out of them.”… This is insanity… ego madness...

What if a family therapist who is working with a family in conflict has the operating theory that …All we need to do is identify the ‘real enemy’ in the family… the trouble maker… the one creating all the destructive energy… and take them out into the back yard and shoot them… Insanity…

Even if people wish to kill us, they are our brothers and sisters… our family… and the family is always an interactive and dynamic system that is also tied to all the other social and relational systems of each of its members. We can defend others who are in some danger and also work to understand and help every family member…

Systems are complex… and unless there are unseen forces at work in transforming a system… most systems will not easily be changed by removing a specific part or person…

Transformation and new integration often begins with some form of dis-integration, disruption, chaos, and confusion…. The new emerges through things coming apart…

When we look at some of the collective and individual behavior in the world, it is no wonder that some think the more ‘advanced’ countries… the more ‘prosperous’ countries share the responsibility for some of the discord on the planet, for the threat to the balance of life on earth, and for the dysfunctional global family dynamics…

The egoic structure…both collective (corporate) and individual… likes nothing more than the idea of ‘free’ will… “Yes,” it celebrates, “I can do whatever I want”… The ego, devoid of a respect for and openness to Life Energy…Spirit… has forgotten the Source of its existence and only wishes to protect its expanding realm, as if the egoic “I” can ever own anything… The ego-maniacs that we have become are often lost in consumerism… in the dung-heap of money and ‘stuff’… even economic theory has been switched to encourage spending and consumerism… using more natural resources to produce more ‘stuff’… mostly lacking respect and love for our Earth home and for our brothers and sisters who are often exploited in the process…

I found these brief “Stuff” videos to be quite educational, enlightening, and entertaining too…
• Info: www.StoryOfStuff.com  from Anne Leonard (18min)

• Humor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvgN5gCuLac  - ‘Stuff’ video with George Carlin (5 min)

There is a corporate power on the earth that is committed to protect its realm at any cost… to maintain its dominion over the Earth and her inhabitants… These wayward children have power and money… and will say what is needed and do what is needed to maintain their status quo…

While this may seem overwhelming, those of us who are open to the larger Essence of Life must continue to be vigilant… to continue to awaken… to help each other stay awake… to Be… and to Act in ways that Love and Respect Life, our Brothers and Sisters, and Earth-Home… And I am convinced we have help at unseen levels…

Let us continue our consciousness connection, focused attunement, prayers, and healing actions this day and every moment…

Let us daily return to the Present moment…forgiving ourselves and others… and letting go of what was… and what will be… so that WHAT IS – can BE!

Love,
John Hutchinson
