The Fire of Life - Wednesday Morning Meditation

"Energy of Sun, enter my solar center and give the fire of Life to my whole body."

As I sense the solar radiance, the energy within my body is feels alive...

Bring your transforming fire through every cell from my head to my feet...

The solar flame bursts from above and continues to the fiery earth's core...

Returning and cycling around and through me and the whole of the universe...

We are now familiar with the benefits of direct sunlight providing nourishment to our bodies. The Essenes knew the importance of the sun in our lives and realized without it there would be no life as we know it. They bathed in the sunlight for health reasons and understood the natural healing energies of the sunlight. Yet overexposure to the sun may also cause harm to the body. Some become lost in the ego's vanity of a dark tan, while others whose work has them in the sun a lot suffer from the overexposure... It is best to be wise and moderate exposure to the powerful rays of the Sun.

Native Americans understood the importance of the Sun in the ongoing cycles of life. The Sundance was a ritual dance of thanksgiving and sacrifice displaying our dependence and gratitude as well as our willingness to serve for the greater good. The dancers danced for the whole community... not for themselves.

Today some forget the community and only stress individual rights like spoiled children who want what they want when they want it. The energy of Sun reminds us that we walk hand in hand, helping one another, all under one big umbrella of radiant energies.

May the vitality our bodies receive directly from the sun enliven us so we may better serve our world and make it a better place for all...

May the radiance of the sun that draws the plants skyward, producing fruit for our bodies, also draw us toward the integrative and harmonizing energies that unite us...

Free and equal Energy of Sun, enter every cell in our bodies, renewing, healing, and energizing each and all toward the loving service of All...

Medicine Walk Runes and Readings

The Medicine Walk was originally a time when a person would walk in nature, often in some designated area. The purpose was to hear the answers to a concern or question from Spirit…including all of Great Mother’s spirits in nature.

The Seminoles developed a method using bone chips with symbols on them after their natural lands were taken from them by the ancestors of many of us. I received the Seminole Medicine Walk chips [or runes] from Sam Thomas, [Caocoohee, of the Whirling Rainbow Lodge] in 1998. The tradition of the Medicine Walk runes or chips was passed down to Sam by his grandmother, Beulah Wise Owl, a Seminole Medicine Woman.

Although I have no known Native American ancestors, I have always sensed a kinship with Native American spirituality and have found the use of the Medicine Walk runes helpful for me and for others as we have done readings together.

"Go West young man"...

In the Native American traditions "West" is the direction on the medicine wheel signifying healing and introspection...the answers are within us... At the end of the day night sets in and we enter the dreamtime. The animal energy of West is also represnted by "Bear".

Bear instinctively knows when it is time to hibernate...to go inside the cave... Bear also knows how to heal itself by eating the right plants given to us by Mother Earth and Father Sky...

It is said that we as young or old as our spirit and heart are. As I approach another birthday in our western culture, it is time once again to listen to the "Bear" medicine and the "West" medicine... and take some time to meditate and listen to that which is deep within... at the heart of inner guidance...

Rites of Passage...

Rites of Passages refer to those times that mark a transition from one stage of life to another, celebrate births, passing to the hereafter, and perhaps other major transitions.


The can be formal tribal and cultural ceremonies... or they may be more subtle or unannounced transitions that are discovered after the fact as a major turning point.


Rites of passage may be transitions in consciousness... as the mind expands to new realms of awareness beyond normal or convention time/space frames of reference...


I found this writing from the Native American traditions that relates to Life's rites of passage:


"The changes of many winters

   mark the cycles of the Wheel,

The lines across my ancient face

   show all that I can feel,

The nature of my passage

   remains a mystery,

For in my heart of hearts,

   I hold my destiny.

When I was but an infant

   in the beginning of time,

I marveled at the wonder of

   discoveries I did find.

Now that I am ancient,

   I have learned once again,

That the weight of every winter,

   brings discovery like a friend."

A transition or passage brings a celebration of the new along with the letting go of what was...

Winter is a time when the Great Mother does some snoozing and awaits the new creations of spring...

Life continues its dancing dynamics during every season and we discover the emergence of new adventures around each corner...

Let gratitude find a nesting place in the barren branches of wintry transitions... and hope in the springs blossoms hidden in dormant roots...

Another Sundancing Birth...

Several weeks ago I finished unpacking some books... and as I was walking past the bookshelves the other day, my eye caught a set of Sacred Path Cards and book combo.

When that sort of thing happens, I usually follow the lead and so for the first time in perhaps 3 years or more I pulled the box off the shelf, opened the cards, and wiggled out one from the middle of the pack to focus on for this now-time in my life...

Out of perhaps 50-60 cards in the pack, the card I drew was "Sun Dance" ...the name I have used for my healing, counseling, and coaching service in the world for many years... Sundance Healing Center, Sundance Wellness Center, Sundance Publications, Sundance Center, Sundance Center Counseling Services, Sundance Transition Services... and more....

In the 90s as I was doing a 'driving' quest across the country, I was led to a Native American tattoo artist who carved the word "Sundance" and a scene with mountains and an eagle on my back. It was a sacred time of initiation and sacrifice and commitment. It was my form of the Sun Dance ceremony.

There have been times, like with many of us, where I became lost here and there as we do sometimes and I 'gave up' on the Sundance vision as a service, ministry, and place of community, healing, and remembering who we are... I became practical and focused on getting a 'real' job, which usually meant a corporate position making good money with benefits... the 'American Way'... in order to provide, to get 'stuff,' and build a 'happy' and 'comfortable' life.  And this has all been part of the journey that is written over and over again through many lives and journeys... Some of us have had a chance to share our stories, our vision, our purpose.... And have even shared moments together of being One with the One Being that is LIFE...

So, the 'coincidence' of drawing the "Sun Dance" card was another of LIFE's miracles for which I am grateful. Talking with an old friend recently, I was asked what I was going to do, "After all you have to make money to take care of yourself as we grow older." I had been explaining that it is a time to BE and to let the newness emerge in the moment.

And so, I am doing just that... I know the strength of Spirit and Life Energy that resides within all of us... I know the 'miracles' that are becoming quite ordinary occurrences... manifestations from the formless space of Being... and I am grateful...

The Sundance Center goes wherever I AM in this world... it travels with this John-form at the core of Being within... we are indeed ONE... My job is to show up as long as LIFE keeps breathing me into action... My job is to BE present in this moment... and as guided, to share the creative life energy that emanates from the Source of Love... to listen in presence, to respond beyond ego and attachments and expectations in truth-telling... that is the vision of this Sundance Center... Continuing to dance the light of the Sun into the world of form...

I continue to write and suspect that times of 'coaching others' and doing workshops or talks or individual sessions will continue to appear. I use a blog format to share and archive writings that flow through this form and also expressions from others. I have recently added a "Sundance Network Associates and Affiliates" section where readers of these words are invited to add your link. We are all interconnected and this is one form to help the search engines make it so in some electronic energetic manner.

So I invite us all to continue dancing together through the inspirations and the unique forms in which Life's Energy... Spirit... chooses to be expressed...
