So... a friend was writing to me and mentioned "impermanence"... as I was considering this, I recalled the adage that "Change is the only constant." Like the sky, our consciousness and the world inside and outside of us is in constant change...energy in motion, constantly transforming... and we create illusions of stability and structure in our lives... We create a nest that, at least for a period of time, has a sense of security and structure. Furniture remains in the same spots... except for occasional shifts we decide to make... and for this reason or that, we transition to another space; and work to somehow make it our own new comfort spot...
We see that Life continues even as the various forms within the larger context of Life transform, decay, die, and new births continue... We lament the changing climate conditions and debate how much the changes are our fault, the sun's fault, or just part of what is... We often panic when life shifts quickly and we are thrown quickly into the uncertainty and reality of change and impermanence...
While the Essence of Life may be the closest thing to a still and continuous permanence, our experience and consciousness continues to show shifts. Like the permanent atmosphere above us, the contents of the air changes like the contents of our consciousness. clouds come and go.... the weather changes... snow, rain, drizzle, clear skies, tornadoes, blizzards, scorching heat... all come and go... extremes seem to be more prevalent...
I suppose we find some solace and peace in understanding the changing nature of Life... some go with what is... some react to change out of fear and wishing to conserve what was or look for someone to blame for the change... rather than accepting the real nature of impermanence...
I suppose most of us enjoy and try to create structure in our lives, yet if we attach ourselves too rigidly to those human-made structures we will surely find ourselves reacting to what is!
So, thanks to my friend [LC] for mentioning "impermanence" and bringing about this reminder to me to hold all things rather lightly with a flexible touch... ready to let go, again, into the present moment!
