Cherokee Story... "Beyond the Conflict of Inner Forces"

Beyond the Conflict of Inner Forces

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life:
"A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy."It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego." He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf will win?"
You might heard the story ends like this: The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
In the Cherokee world, however, the story ends this way:
The old Cherokee simply replied, "If you feed them right, they both win." and the story goes on:
"You see, if I only choose to feed the white wolf, the black one will be hiding around every corner waiting for me to become distracted or weak and jump to get the attention he craves. He will always be angry and always fighting the white wolf. But if I acknowledge him, he is happy and the white wolf is happy and we all win. For the black wolf has many qualities - tenacity, courage, fearlessness, strong-willed and great strategic thinking - that I have need of at times and that the white wolf lacks. But the white wolf has compassion, caring, strength and the ability to recognize what is in the best interest of all.
"You see, son, the white wolf needs the black wolf at his side. To feed only one would starve the other and they will become uncontrollable. To feed and care for both means they will serve you well and do nothing that is not a part of something greater, something good, something of life. Feed them both and there will be no more internal struggle for your attention. And when there is no battle inside, you can listen to the voices of deeper knowing that will guide you in choosing what is right in every circumstance. Peace, my son, is the Cherokee mission in life. A man or a woman who has peace inside has everything. A man or a woman who is pulled apart by the war inside him or her has nothing.
"How you choose to interact with the opposing forces within you will determine your life. Starve one or the other or guide them both."

"Unconscious and evil"

October 10, 2012

This morning I woke with the theme of “Unconscious and Evil” in my awareness... so, here are a few thoughts to consider...

One of the reasons that it is important to become more aware and conscious is because that which remains below the level of awareness or consciousness can and often does tend to control our behavior, feelings, and thoughts. This may result in ways that may not be in our best interest or in the best interest of others.

“Evil” is another word for that which seems rather negative to us in its energy, intent, and actions. It is most likely driven by unconscious energy which was caused by a major trauma, attack, and abuse in the past. Anger, hate, and other very negative feelings and behaviors are generally indicators of a deeply painful past. To project “evil” on some “Devil” or enemy out there is to deny the shadow aspects that are present in all.

We are survivors and many actions and behaviors are the fruits of the desire to survive and to get what we want or need. And there is a difference between want and need of course. We experience that want to grab what others have from childhood onward.

We retain the energy memory of those things that created frustrations and pain in our emotional body. Something Eckhart Tolle has termed the “pain body.” As long as we are identified with these energies from the past or reacting to them in some unconscious way, we are more likely to be living our lives in less than satisfying ways.

If we have a need to retell the stories from the past that were traumatic for us, it may be a way of simply feeding the pain body and keeping us from being more fully in the present. Some sharing is important as we release those negative energies from the past. Continual focus will grow the pain body stronger.

Studies have shown that what we focus upon or say actually emits frequencies that create various degrees of harmony and chaos in water molecules  [Dr. Masaru Emoto, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAvzsjcBtx8 ]

Let us focus upon positive and harmonious thoughts and words so we may emit these frequencies through our being and into the world around us.

“Evil” is an interpretation of unconscious action that is neither harmonious nor peaceful. It perhaps is the extreme of unconsciously motivated behavior. Whatever the original actions were that brought about such unconscious actions, we can only make changes in our lives and help impede negative actions of others which might harm life on the planet. Of course this is why all social order has seen the need for laws, guidelines, and moral codes.

Change does happen. It has happen for each of us in some way. Let us be open to ‘seeing’ that which was unconscious and make choices in the best interest of ourselves and others going forward. Let us be diligent in our present awareness.

Practice: Visualizations and meditation focused on cleansing our emotional body with light energy can be quite freeing. Forgiveness in the form of letting go of the past can help liberate us to be more fully present now. Contemplating and mediating on positive words and energies will help these energies grow within us and produce both internal and external effects. [love, joy, peace, harmony, beauty, etc.,]

“The Perpetrator of Evil”

In his book, “A New Earth – Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose,” Eckhart Tolle discusses the personal and collective “pain-body” in which the “victim” identity continually needs to be fed and reinforced through sharing past pain, blaming, and identifying enemies.

Tolle writes:
“… you can only go beyond (the pain-body) by taking responsibility for your inner state now. Even if blame seems more than justified, as long as you blame others, you keep feeding the pain-body with your thoughts and remain trapped in your ego. There is only one perpetrator of evil on the planet: human unconsciousness. That realization is true forgiveness. With forgiveness, your victim identity dissolves, and your true power emerges – the power of Presence. Instead of blaming the darkness, you bring in the light.” (pp.159-160)
